‘Sold out’: Australian item flying off shelves at Spotlight

A cult product featuring an iconic Aussie snack is flying off the shelves at Spotlight — and it’s finally coming back.
When an exclusive Bubble-O-Bill quilt cover set and matching cushion launched at Spotlight in March, it sold out in just four weeks, with Victorian and Queensland customers quickest to pick up the sets.
The colourful cotton design — illustrated by Gold Coast fabric designer Ellie Whittaker — features the iconic Australian ice cream, Bubble-O-Bill, as well as his long-lost sister, Bubble-O-Jill.
“Bubble-O-Bill”, an ode to Aussie summer nostalgia, has been trending in the retailer’s search bar ever since.
“The uptake on the range has been incredible. Although we had a hunch that the range would be popular, we never imagined it would be so successful,” Spotlight’s global head of marketing, Padma Palani, told news.com.au.
“It just highlights the power of nostalgia and how adults are drawn to positive memories from their youth.”
News.com.au can confirm, after staggering demand from shoppers, the sellout design will return to Spotlight’s shelves in September in a new green colourway.
Also due to popular demand, the retailer will release a king size quilt cover set in the green colourway, which it says will appeal to “big kids” or “kidults”.
The pink version that was so popular earlier this year was only available in single, double and queen sizes.
Shoppers went wild for the original design when it was shared to Whittaker’s Instagram page.
“Bring some chocolate-y, strawberry-y, vanilla-y, bubble-gummy deliciousness into your bedroom! Seriously: Bill has it ALL,” Whittaker wrote at the time.
“Some of you have already spotted this superstar in store… Run, don’t walk!”
“My daughter would lose her mind over this quilt. She has randomly got a Bubble O Bill obsession and hasn’t even had one!” one commenter said.
“Got my set this week! Freshly washed and ready to be slept in!” another cheered.
Several fans called for the design to made available in king size — and their prayers have now been answered.

“OMG no king size! It’s magical and I love it.” one person cried.
Another, however, begged the retailer to take it a step further.
“Wish it came in a super king,” they said.
