Meet Matt and Josh, the design couple Aussies are obsessed with
A clip arguing a common household feature should be “banned” sparked a huge debate, with many agreeing they “can’t stand” it either.
Working with your other half could be a recipe for disaster – but for this Australian couple, it has proved to be a “dream come true”.
Matt Moss and Josh Jessup met each other at university in Brisbane and moved in together in 2018.
For years, both worked regular jobs. Matt had a gig at his local Woolworths, while Josh did the overnight shift at McDonald’s.
During the pandemic, the pair found themselves unemployed, so they started sharing interior design tips online, an act which has “completely changed” life as they once knew it.
Now the couple work together, creating their own their own art and home decor as well as dishing out interior design tips that are devoured by the six million followers they’ve earned across TikTok and Instagram.
“We have very different lives now compared to when we first met eight years ago, Matt was working at Woolworths, and I was doing overnights at McDonald’s,” Josh told news.com.au.
“Doing what we get to do has been such a dream come true for us both and we genuinely still struggle to process how it’s all worked out.
“The cherry on top really is that we get to do it as a couple.”
One of the main things followers love about the videos shared on the @mattandjoshdeisgn social media accounts is seeing inside the couple’s three-bedroom inner-city Melbourne apartment, which the artsy content creators have transformed with their “fun and fantastical” flair.
Think bright colours, such as orange, red and yellow, and one-off pieces, such as Matt and Josh’s infamous nose wall lamp.
But often, it’s their strong opinions on what you should – and more importantly, shouldn’t – do when designing a space that capture the most attention.
“Our most viral video of all time was ‘why big lights should be banned’,” he continued, adding it earned about 80 million views.
“It’s so hard to even compute that figure. I think that it went viral because it was an informative video that was also very silly and fun, and a lot of people seem to hate the big light which we’re proud of. Viral videos can be so unpredictable you’re never quite sure what will pop off next.”
More than 22,000 people commented on the clip, weighing in on what the right level of lighting was, and whether or not they would forbid “offensive” lighting in their own home.
“OMG I can’t stand dimmed light, I’m a big light girlie,” one shared.
“The big light feels like when they turn on the lights in the club and you’re just embarrassingly forced to go home,” another chipped in.
It’s this honest, yet fun approach to sharing their home with Australia that has garnered such a huge following – and even recently earned them a nomination for the highly coveted 2024 TikTok Creator of the Year award.
It has also opened other doors for Matt and Josh, such as their recent partnership with chocolate bar KitKat to design its Christmas-themed cabin, located in Newport, northern Sydney, in partnership with Booking.com.
“When thinking about what would make this place a special experience for a family to take a break – we decided to create a gorgeous eclectic Christmas tree covered in KitKat bars,” Matt told news.com.au.
“There’s also a giant KitKat cushion on the beds, and we’ve set up the table ready to host the family Christmas dinner. Plus there is even a DIY table for you to create your unique KitKat Christmas Cabin.
“Everything is ready to just sit back, relax and enjoy the beach which we think is the ultimate Aussie break.”
The special house, just one hour from city’s CBD, is described as a “beachfront sanctuary” featuring its own private beach access, a swimming pool, and three bedrooms.
“We’ve helped show people that personality driven design that reflects who you are is very powerful,” Matt added.
“And even if you’re not a maximalist or enjoy eclectic decor you can still find inspiration from us or just vicariously live through our decorating.
“We find inspiration from the past and look to the future, but our biggest inspiration would be experimentation. It’s how we’ve decorated our own homes over the years and it’s the best way to learn because you try things first-hand.”
While a two-night stay at the property is valued at $4650, Aussies can win the “ultimate break” at the “IRL Booking.com KitKat Christmas Cabin” by purchasing a KitKat Cabin Kit and uploading a completed Aussie-themed KitKat Christmas Cabin Kit to Instagram main feed with the hashtag #KitKatCabinComp and tag @kitkatanz by 11.59pm AEDT on 5 December.
And if you’re wondering how Matt and Josh eat their KitKats, then ponder no longer, as the pair told news.com.au they took a classic approach to demolishing the cult bar.
“We are definitely part of the finger snapping team, I know it’s a little delusional, but it makes you feel like there was even more KitKat to enjoy,” Josh explained.
