Kmart cubby house hack leaves thousands shocked
An Aussie mum’s first ever Kmart hack has left thousands shocked after she shared snaps of her “amazing” transformation online.
Lauren Smith of Queensland had no idea that when posting her first ever hack online, it would attract 5000 likes and hundreds of comments.
The mother-of-one said she simply wanted to create a reading oasis for her toddler and what better way than to transform the popular Kmart cubby house into a walk-in book store.
“Oh my gosh I honestly never thought it would get such a large reaction,” Ms Smith told news.com.au.
“I’m still trying to figure out why, but I guess what parent wouldn’t want a little oasis for their kids to learn, play and read in.”

The 30-year-old who posted images of her transformation to the Facebook group Kmart Hacks & Decor said she really wanted her daughter, one-year-old Isla, to grow up with a love for reading and books.
“Learning is important even at such a young age. Don’t get me wrong, we usually can’t read more than one page before she shuts the book on us and moves on, but it’s something she’ll continue to grow with.”
To help transform the DIY wooden abode into an enchanting book store, Ms Smith said she spent about $400 in total, including the cost of the $199 cubby house.
“I got four shelves from Ikea. They’re actually spice racks and were much cheaper at $4.99 each compared to their actual book shelves, which were roughly $20 each,” the Brisbane mum said.

The flower decal from mydeal.com.au cost her $30, while the plants set her back just $20 (from Spotlight). She made the chandelier herself using $30 worth of materials also from Spotlight, while the fairy lights, rug and pillows were from Kmart.
“It took me about three weeks all up, including painting. But luckily I had my parents to help with that,” Ms Smith said.
“Then I had my stepdad screw the MDF panel in the back to create the wall for the shelves and I did all the interior with some help from my mum.”
Ms Smith, who created the book store for her daughter’s first birthday, said her little girl seemed to be chuffed with her magical present.
“But that’s because she figured out how to open and close the door herself. She probably spent 20 minutes just opening and shutting the door that first day,” Ms Smith laughed.
However, now she finds Isla sitting in her transformed cubby house playing.
“My husband and I get in there too and play with her all the time.”
Since sharing images of inside the enchanted book store, Ms Smith’s post has been bombarded with comments from fellow mums eager to give it a go.
“We should absolutely do this for the kids! How gorgeous,” one woman wrote, tagging her friend.
“That is just sooo precious,” another wrote.
“I saw this the other day and screen shot it. Beautiful,” a third person commented.
“Amazing! Bubba is gonna be smart like mumma,” a fourth said.
Others simply branded it as “stunning” and “adorable”.
“Honestly, I’m still so surprised by the amount of feedback I got,” Ms Smith said, revealing it’s given her the confidence to tackle another DIY project.
