Dyson launches Solarcycle Morph Desk, smart light with auto-adjust
The British tech giant is famed for its vacuums, but Dyson has ventured out into new territory, with a new product launching in Australia.
Dyson is best known for its vacuums and, in more recent times, its commitment to air quality – but the tech giant has an entire homewares range many don’t know exists.
The British innovators released its first “intelligent light” four years ago after Sir James Dyson acquired his son Jake Dyson’s lighting firm in 2015.
Now, the brand has announced the Dyson Solarcycle Morph Desk which hits shelves across Australia on September 21.
The new $899 smart lamp has built on the core technology of the tech giant’s first lighting product, the Lightcycle Task Light which launched in 2019.
It still features Dyson’s speciality bulb – made up of three warm and three cool LEDs – that lasts 60 years.
But it has added other features, enabling it to adjust the glow it emits depending on the user’s task, age, mood and local visibility.
The first Solarcycle Morph was a floor lamp that launched in international markets in May 2022, but Dyson’s newest offering in Australia is a smaller version suitable for desks and side tables.
It uses a “Daylight Tracking” algorithm to emulate natural light and is mounted on an “Intelligent Optical Head” which has 360° manoeuvrability, something Dyson claims can help with visual fatigue and eye strain caused by low lights and flickering
“With the Dyson Solarcycle Morph, our aim was to challenge the fundamental conventions of contemporary artificial lighting and find a solution,” Jake Dyson, chief engineer, said in a statement.
“So we developed a light that tracks natural day light and intelligently transforms for different uses – providing the right light, at the right time, precisely where it’s needed.”
Dyson says it can be used as an indirect light, a task light, feature light and an ambient light.
“From waking up with an artificial sunrise in a bedroom, working with a powerful high-quality task light, enhancing interiors with the dramatic feature lighting or relaxing in the evening with soothing ambient light, the Dyson Solarcycle Morph Desk is engineered for versatility,” the brand states.
The lamp can also be synched to the MyDyson App to give users a customised experience, such as using the brand’s “Age Adjust”.
“A 65-year-old needs up to four times more light than a 20-year-old,” Dyson explained.
“The Dyson Solarcycle Morph corrects brightness based on the age entered into the MyDyson app, meaning that the older the user, the brighter the light.”
It also has six preset modes: Study, Relax, Precision, Boost, Wake-up, Sleep and Away as well as manual control with slide-touch dimming and colour temperature selection to define personal light preferences.
Under the presets, the light uses a sensor to know when you’ve entered a room and will turn on, while also being clever enough to know when you’re sleeping and not activate as you stir in the night.
It will also automatically switch off once no movement has been detected for five minutes, helping to save energy.
The user can also set the light to turn on at the time they like to wake up, and brighten gradually to create a smoother wake-up environment.
