Big W releases new homewares collection for autumn and winter

One major department store has spent the past six months designing and bringing to life a homewares collection with the motto “luxury for less”.

Big W has unveiled its new luxe homewares collection just in time for the colder weather.

The collection – which took six months for the in-house team to pull together – was inspired by the idea of luxury for less.

“We’re really proud of how the whole collection feels very elegant and feels very high end and timeless but the pricing is amazing,” Beth Finckh, Big W’s senior manager of general merchandise, told news.com.au.

“I think the really important thing for us is yes, we’ve stayed in trend and we’ve moved on in shape and colour. But we’ve deliberately tried to design pieces that are going to have longevity.”

She said while often autumn and winter collections around the world focus on darker colours the Big W team wanted to include brighter hues in the collection such as white, tanzine and various shades of green.

This was because in Australia, despite it being cooler, the weather doesn’t get as harsh and our homes typically feature brighter tones.

Layering – typically seen in fashion – was also at the forefront of the homewares collection. Beth said this idea was “really fun to play with” as it gives an extra dimension when creating the perfect living room and bedroom spaces.

Materials that are stand out in the collection are bouclé – which was popular in Big W’s last autumn collection drop – as well as faux travertine, cotton and faux fur.

Another focus of the collection was the idea of entertaining in the home due to colder weather and cost-of-living pressures.

The collection was pulled together with the help of the forecast team, which helps pick trends and colours, as well as an in-house print team, which draws all original designs by hand, a sourcing team, which helps find vendors, and quality assurance, who test the product to make sure it is up to standard.

To debut their new collection, Big W held an open home where influencers such as The Block’s Mitch and Mark, organisation guru Anita Birges, homehacker Chantel Mila and interior designer Brie Turton, tackled a room each using items from Big W.

Chantel took on the living room, saying; “Achieving luxury in the home doesn’t need to be expensive and with BIG W’s home living range, there is an incredible selection of high-quality products to help you create a refined space without the price tag.”
