A woman has exposed a common problem facing Australians during the colder seasons.

Tiegan Maree took to social media to share a public service announcement about a common laundry mistake.

“Don’t wash your puffer jackets in the washing machine,” she said, showing her deflated jacket to her followers.

“There’s no more puff — look!”

Many social media users had strong opinions on what happened, with some labelling not putting puffer jackets in washing machines as “common sense”.

Aussie's laundry discovery stuns

“Everyone saying it’s common sense but I would of done this. Thx girl,” one social media user commented.

Another said: “Wait what HAHA. I wash mine all the time and never had this happen.”

“I have never washed my puffer jacket because I’m scared of what might happen,” one added.

Another said: “So no one reads tags for garments anymore.”

“Girllll it’ll fluff back up after it’s dry hahah. I’ve washed my Kathmandu heaps and always comes out like this then goes back to normal,” one commented.

In the end, it turned out Tiegan may have panicked a little too soon as, after it dried, her jacket returned to normal. Not everyone has had the same experience.

“My mum put my north face jacket in there and it now looks like that,” one commented.

“Is that from Uniqlo? If it is I have the same one and the exact same thing happened to mine. “So sad too because it’s the best puffer jacket,” another commiserated.

One added: “Just hid my husband’s because I did the same thing and it’s come out like that too

“However, while it turns out Tiegan may have panicked too soon as after it dried her jacket returned to normal, not everyone has had the same experience,” another added.

The video resonated with more than 2.5 million people.

Sara Shorter, who is a research and development technologist at OMO, weighed in on the matter.

“Puffer jackets can usually safely go in the washing machine. However, you may choose to preserve your favourite polyester pieces for longer by washing them by hand,” she told news.com.au.

She said there were simple steps to washing them by hand, including putting warm water in a tub with a small about of detergent, sweep the puffer gently around in the water, when it’s clean rinse it with cold water and hang it up to dry.

“Always check the care label, but as a general rule you will need to use a short, gentle cycle on low heat,” she said.
