Adelaide mum sparks huge divide with ‘messy’ bedroom cleaning video

An Adelaide mum-of-two who went viral for a TikTok about her ‘messy’ bedroom has spoken out about the criticism.

Admit it: you’ve let your bedroom get a bit messy sometimes.

Or maybe more than a bit messy – that’s OK too, who hasn’t let their clothes morph into a floordrobe during an especially busy week?

But one Adelaide mum has faced fierce criticism after sharing a video on TikTok of her cleaning her “messy” bedroom.

Emmy Rachelle is a mum-of-two who has more than 373,000 followers who follow her daily life vlogs.

She told news.com.au that she had been surprised by the “harsh” reaction to the video.

“I think there is always going to be that someone who has something to say, people have opinions and that‘s fine,” Emmy said.

“I didn’t expect some to be so harsh about it but we all have different tolerances and lifestyles, it’s very heart warming to see all the support that my bedroom clean video got and that’s the important thing.”

In a video last week Emmy shared a how-to guide on cleaning for a rental inspection.

“Inspections for private renters can be really daunting sometimes so I am going to show you how I tackle my house,” she said.

“If you’re like me your bedroom might get a little bit messy sometimes.”

She started out by changing her bed sheets before dusting “every little spot in your room” and then wiping down “everything and anything”.

Emmy finished off by cleaning the vents in her ceiling and vacuuming, showing off the clean result.

The video, which has been viewed more that 347,000 times, attracted hundreds of comments, some that criticised Emmy over the state of the bedroom before the clean.

“Do you know it’s much easier if you just clean and maintain your house on the daily,” one person wrote.

“No my bedroom doesn’t get like that!” another said.

“Yeh maybe wouldn’t be so hard if you tried to tackle things daily,” one viewer also commented.

But Emmy’s followers leapt to her defence, saying they appreciated “seeing a real, lived-in house” as it “means you live in it”.

“Let’s normalise messy rooms … if your room is show house tidy then you’re a psychopath,” one person wrote.

“Jeez if her house is messy you’d hate to see mine! Absolutely shocking most of the time,” another said.

“I don’t even know why people care about how others clean? Like just make sure your own house is cleaned to your standards,” one person commented.

Emmy responded to the criticism in a follow-up video and said that only people who didn’t watch her daily vlogs would accuse her of not cleaning.

“I’m sure the people who have been here long enough to have watched a year’s worth of daily vlogs are probably going to turn around and be like ‘yo, she’s always cleaning’,” Emmy said.

“Wow, I let one bedroom in my house accumulate a little mess – mind you majority of it was from paper that my kid had chopped up, a pack of chips that she had dropped on the floor that same day, and a bunch of clean clothes that had just come out of the washing.”

Emmy told news.com.au she hopes her video shows others that it’s OK to fall behind in housework when life gets busy.

“I want to show them that they are not the only ones and even people that post on the internet that show the ‘perfect’ side of life can also have their hands full sometimes and that’s OK,” she said.

“ As long as someone was motivated or it made someone happy than my video was a success.”
