WE'RE pulling a story out of the archives today to help you get organised this weekend.

IT'S the first-world problem that was around long before issues with iPhones and technology: the fitted sheet, and how the hell do you fold them?

Blame poor design, lack of time, lack of space, lack of energy but whatever it is, you are not alone. Nobody knows how to fold the damn things – not even the PM.

Fear not, news.com.au has tracked down the answer. Heck, we've even made you an instruction video. But first, the back story.

Beth Macdonald, who hails from the Southern Highlands in New South Wales, writes a daily post about life and raising a family on her blog BabyMac. She is a person so fastidious about the correct method for folding fitted sheets, she even brought it up in conversation while at dinner with Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

BabyMac was one of four bloggers invited to dinner last month while the PM was camped at Rooty Hill.

"It sort of came up in light hearted conversation about our local show. I had entered a scone for competition and the PM was saying that one of her staff members regularly does a similar kind of thing. That conversation turned into a bit of chat about good linen and how you fold it properly," giggled Ms Macdonald.

"The PM really glossed over and was pretty confounded by the conversation. I said to her, 'Well what do you do when you have guests for the weekend and you want the sheets to look great?' And she said something like, 'Ah no, I don't tend to worry about that'."

But as the PM may well be in the minority, Ms Macdonald has outlined the three golden rules when it comes to folding fitted sheets.

1.Give yourself lots of space. Do it on the floor because you need a lot of folding room.
2.Be patient. It takes practice to get it right , so take a deep breath and stick with it.
3.Remember that a single bed sheet is harder than a double sheet.

And what reward can you expect for all your hard work?

Ms Macdonald said you will gain more space in your linen cupboard and the neatness is more pleasing to the eye.

"When you pull the sheets out they will be altogether less wrinkly and your bed will be made perfectly," she said.

Ms Macdonald said she had plenty of interest in all things "household management" and even had a section on her blog devoted to it called "Solving the Big Issues".

"I'm really surprised how passionate people get when they're talking about mundane tasks like unpacking the dishwasher and the correct way to hang out washing. Some people genuinely have a colour pegging strategy, where certain items are used with blue pegs or all red pegs," she said.
