The budget retailer has identified a new Australian trend that is proving “very popular” among shoppers – and has taken over stores.

If you’ve been shopping in the last few weeks, there’s no doubt you’ve been smacked in the face with festive cheer.

But while Santa, reindeers and trees adorned with twinkling lights are things you’d expect to see during the silly season, some Aussies have noticed a new character emerge in the festivities.

Stores are filled with an array of gingerbread-themed products, including decorations, homewares and clothing – with Kmart telling news.com.au it was a new trend that had taken over in 2024.

Rennie Freer, the Australian retailer’s general manager, said customers can’t get enough of products featuring the adorable gingerbread man.

“Anything gingerbread-themed is really on trend this year, it’s a really nostalgic twist on the northern hemisphere nod that we love in Australia,” she shared.

“It’s really iconic, and features heavily across all of our product ranges, such as the family matching pyjamas which are always a huge winner, and the beautiful Christmas jumpers.

“It has been going very viral this year.”

“The adorable Gingerbread Serve Bowl for $7 and the drinking jars starting from $3 are also flying off shelves,” a Kmart spokesperson told news.com.au.

“Our customers are loving the gingerbread theme. It’s playful, nostalgic, and perfect for creating a warm, festive vibe at home. From home decor to holiday baking, this theme is all about spreading cheer, and Aussies are embracing it wholeheartedly.”

It comes after shoppers went nuts for a $15 “dupe” of a popular $60 item.

The new $15 “Glowing Festive Scene” which is available in both “Gingerbread” and “Spice” varieties has emerged as a crowd favourite, with Kmart fans comparing it to a designer candle brand.

“This is giving Glasshouse dupe,” one TikTok user claimed, comparing it to a designer Australian brand that retails for $60.

As another said. “It looks so expensive.”

While one simply said: “Stunning.”
