OUR inability to deal with stress leaves us frustrated and anxious an average of 234 times a year, according to research.

Being stuck in traffic, worrying about our health and managing finances are the main things that leave us feeling powerless.

An unfortunate 3 per cent, equivalent to 1.3 million adults, feel out of control more than 20 times a week - 1,040 a year.

Nearly a third of the 2,699 people surveyed blamed their anxiety on 'putting things off', another third were 'too busy to do everything' and a quarter were 'too disorganised'.

The research, by energy firm E.ON, revealed different stress triggers for men and women.

Traffic was the most common factor among men, with 37 per cent saying they feel powerless when stuck in a jam.

Illness topped the list for women, leaving 44 per cent feeling helpless, closely followed by worrying about their weight.

Judi James, an expert in social behaviour, said that "A perceived lack of control over things in life - such as our household bills or our professional workload - is enough to create a sense of anxiety for most people."

On Monday, we found out that there are six foods that contribute to feelings of anxiousness. Click here for the foods.
