Queensland Health has caused a stir after encouraging the population to “give yourself a hand” – and embrace masturbation.

In a new Facebook post, Queensland Health explains that “masturbation is a normal and healthy part of a person’s sexual experience and a great way to discover what you are comfortable with”.

“The best part is, it’s for everyone — and also offers a wealth of health and sexual health benefits!

“It’s important for us all to work towards normalising sex-positive messages about masturbation to reduce associated feelings of shame and fear, and improve overall sexual health and literacy.”

The post also includes a link to a more detailed article, which includes information about “stigmas” as well as advice for parents and carers to help them talk to their children about masturbation.

The article goes on to list all the benefits of masturbation, including that it releases endorphins that influence mental wellbeing, that orgasms may help reduce menstrual cramping and speed up childbirth, that it can help promote positive body image, that it may promote better sleep, that it is a form of safe sex and helps you become familiar with your sexual responses.

The post sparked an outpouring of interest, attracting thousands of comments, likes and shares, with many unable to resist cracking a joke or sharing a double entendre.

“In these hard times we need to all pull together,” one person joked, while another wrote: “Gives the slogan ‘arm yourself’ a new meaning …”

“Old ‘Happy Harold’ never told me about this …” another joked, while another said: “My doctor said I can touch my self when ever I like. No, he said you could have a stroke at any moment”.

“Just brilliant! I wonder when all the funny comments will reach a climax?” another added.

While the comments were full of laughs, many also took the time to praise Queensland Health for sharing an important message and helping to normalise conversations around masturbation.

The article finished up with some more words of advice.

“This is such an important topic!! Teaching our children to explore their bodies and get to know what is enjoyable, what’s not and to understand what is healthy has been a taboo topic for far too long! Thank you Queensland Health for this post!” one person wrote, with the comments attracting dozens of likes.

“Sexual pleasure is very individual and looks different for everyone,” it reads.

“Remember that masturbation is a healthy and safe sexual activity that can make you feel relaxed, happier, and more comfortable within yourself.

“If you have any questions or are unsure on how to discuss this topic with your children, please see your GP for professional and personalised advice.”
