Vasectomy given to the wrong patient

AN English surgeon could have his medical license revoked after he performed a vasectomy on the wrong patient.

AN English surgeon made more than just a teeny weeny error — performing a vasectomy on the wrong patient.

Dr. Ninikram Vaswani, a urologist at Broadgreen Hospital in Liverpool, is facing numerous charges and the possibility of having his medical license revoked after he admitted tying the wrong person’s tubes, according to the UK Telegraph.

The slip-up came during a particularly hectic day in February 2014 at Vaswani’s office, where patients who showed up for appointments at 7:30am — like the victim, there to have scar tissue removed — were being seen after those who showed up four hours later.

“A certain amount of anger was displayed by patients on that day,” the doctor said during his hearing with the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service.

That’s when a decision was made to change the order of the list, a move not communicated to the operating team.

“It’s my understanding Patient A was brought into theatre outside of sequence for these reasons,” said Christopher Dawson, a consultant urological surgeon, according to the Telegraph.

Unsurprisingly, the error left the man “physically and emotionally traumatised.”

Once he realised he had operated on the wrong patient, the doctor tried to reverse the vasectomy — a procedure he hadn’t performed in five years and wasn’t authorised to do, according to the Telegraph. It was not clear if he was able to successfully reverse the operation.

Vaswani acknowledged that he made a series of egregious mistakes, including not checking the patient’s medical notes and not confirming his identity.
