How Turia Pitt is giving back to small businesses affected by coronavirus pandemic and bushfires

Since her accident in 2011, Turia Pitt has known the importance of finding small things to be grateful for every day. But this year, she’s discovered that giving back to others has had a powerful impact on her, too.

From bushfires to the coronavirus pandemic, 2020 has delivered more than its fair share of stress, worry and uncertainty.

With just a few weeks of the year to go, best-selling author, athlete and mindset coach Turia Pitt says the events of 2020 have crystallised a few things for her about maintaining happiness in the most trying times.

“As well as reinforcing what I already knew thanks to my accident in 2011 – that finding even the smallest things to be grateful for every day is so powerful – it reminded me how important it is to give back,” said Pitt, who is featured in the Wellness+ liftout in today’s paper.

She’s done that in spades this year, most notably when she launched Spend With Them with colleague Grace McBride at the height of Australia’s worst bushfire season on record.

An Instagram account originally designed to profile small businesses doing it tough in bushfire-affected areas, now it’s doing the same for those impacted by COVID.

“I’ve found that when I’m stressed or overwhelmed, it helps to shift my focus by thinking ‘what could I do right now that would help others?’. It’s a strategy that’s definitely helped me navigate what 2020 has thrown at us,” she said.
