Coronavirus Victoria: Worst day yet with 725 cases announced

Victoria has recorded 66 new mystery cases overnight, bringing the totally amount where the primary source of infection is unknown to an alarming 2454.

Premier Daniel Andrews announced that the state had recorded 450 new cases in 24 hours, before saying the number of “mystery cases” were far too many.

“So (there have been) 66 additional mystery cases,” he said.

“That number is lower than it has been in recent days.

“We’re obviously pleased about that but it is still far too many of those mystery community transmission cases that we can’t find the source or the circumstance behind that infection.”

Mr Andrews also announced 11 more deaths in the past 24 hours.

A woman in her 50s died, while two men in their 70s, three men and three women in their 80s and two women in their 90s also succumbed to the deadly virus. The state’s death toll is at 181.

Premier Daniel Andrews said seven of the 11 fatalities were linked to the state’s plagued aged-care system.

He also said 607 Victorians are in hospital and 41 in intensive care, with 911 active cases in healthcare workers.

It comes after two men were arrested for planning a protest where hundreds of people were set to “fill up the streets” and defy Melbourne’s lockdown.

The Facebook event – where 124 people have clicked attending and 384 others interested – was threatening to march the CBD streets to Parliament House on Sunday at 10am.

“Let’s blow this one up and fill up the streets to show these criminals we won’t give up our country and livelihoods without a fight,” the Facebook event description said.

The two 41-year-olds will be charged for incitement and front a magistrate at a later date.
