We need to talk about our obesity problem

The UK’s fattest man has had to be hoisted out of his home by a crane for medical treatment, after his weight left him trapped inside for five years.

Jason Holton, a 30-year-old “takeaway addict” who lives in Camberley, Surrey, weighs approximately 317kg – and said he had 10,000-calorie eating marathons involving soft drink, sandwiches, chocolate and chips.

It was a diet that resulted in Mr Holton requiring medical assistance – with a crane removing him from his third-floor bedroom.

“I had eaten to a point where I suddenly couldn’t move an inch,” Mr Holton told The Sun, in an interview from hospital.

“And I was happy to stay there without calling for help.

“I left myself to die and waited for my heart to give up. I felt there was nothing left in life for me.”

He eventually made the decision to call emergency services, with a seven-hour crane operation needed to lift him from his two-bedroom flat – where he’d been trapped since 2015 – earlier this month.

Rescuers had to remove the bedroom window so that Mr Holton could be carried out.

More than 30 firemen lined the street outside the row of shops Mr Holton lives above with his mother, while structural engineers feared the ceiling would collapse if he fell.

Mr Holton said it was “amazing” to experience fresh air for the first time in “six years”.

“I was given codeine to take away the pain from the crane straps, but all I remember is the breath of fresh air and the breeze rushing over my body,” he said.

“There was a risk I wouldn’t survive the lift. There were issues with my oxygen levels but I told my rescuers to go ahead – or else I’d only end up dying inside my flat.”

He was taken to hospital in a specialist ambulance, where he was treated for lymphoedema – a chronic condition that causes water retention and swelling – in his groin and legs.

His 52-year-old mother, Leisa, who also acts as his carer, said she fears she is going to lose her only child.

“Doctors have said he won’t last another five years. He’ll end up having a heart attack,” she told the publication.

While he’d always been big, Mr Holton said things took a turn for the worse in 2014, when he signed up to a takeaway home-delivery service called JustEat, leading him to spend close to $18,500 annually on takeaway food.

“I was using my debit card to order food. I’d buy a mixture of takeaways, mainly kebab meat and chips, sometimes Chinese,” he explained.

“Then I’d wash it down with litres of orange juice and Diet Coke – and snack on sandwiches and treats until the early hours. My bank statements were a joke.

“I was considered for gastric band surgery during that time but the NHS turned me down and told my mum to rip up my debit card.”

While Mr Holton said he takes “responsibility” for his situation, he is now urging the government to do more to protect the UK’s health – including placing a limit on the number of takeaway meals a service can deliver to somebody’s home over a certain time period.

“If it wasn’t for food delivery apps, I’d never be as bad as I am now,” he said.
