The author behind the smash hit Confessions of a Shopaholic that helped launched Isla Fisher’s career has revealed a devastating diagnosis.
Sophie Kinsella revealed to fans on Wednesday UK time that in 2022 she was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.
“I did not share this before because I wanted to make sure that my children were able to hear and process the news in privacy and adapt to our ‘new normal’,” she said in her statement posted to her website.
Kinsella’s books are described as chick-lit, with her most notable series including Confessions of a Shopaholic being made into a film in 2009.
She has also written The Burnout, Can You Keep A Secret? and The Party Crasher.
She said she has been under the care of the University College Hospital in London, and has had a successful surgery.
Sophie is still going through radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
“At the moment all is stable and I am feeling generally very well, though I get very tired and my memory is even worse than it was before,” she said.
She said she is grateful to her family and close friends for their support and thanked the medical staff who have treated her.
“I am also so grateful to my readers for your constant support. The wonderful response to The Burnout has really buoyed me up, during a difficult time,” she said.
“To everyone who is suffering from cancer in any form I send love and best wishes, as well as to those who support them. It can feel very lonely and scary to have a tough diagnosis, and the support and care of those around you means more than words can say.”
Friends and fans shared their support.
“Sending you so much love and healing energy,” wrote Fisher.
Another said: “Sophie!!!! Nooooo!!!!! Thank you for sharing but I am gutted to learn what you’ve been through. Sending strength and love.”
“You don’t us personally but you know this group of people love you for all the joy your books have given us. We’ve spent countless hours with you and when we hear your name we immediately think of our favourite book by you, so for that we love you! Let that strength lift you up during your time of need,” another wrote.
