A drunk-driver who crashed into a shopfront in Melbourne’s eastern suburbs was supposed to be self-isolating after returning from overseas.

The 23-year-old Deepdene man drove into the Balwyn North property at about 5am on Tuesday and returned a positive breath test at the scene, Victoria Police said.

The man, who is understood to have returned from overseas 13 days ago, was taken to Box Hill Hospital with minor injuries.

He will be interviewed in relation to both the crash and his failure to comply with the mandatory 14-day quarantine for returning travellers.

Individuals flouting the rule can be fined $1652 on the spot.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews was asked at a press conference this morning if he would like to throw the book at the man but he refused to comment on individual cases.

“If you break the rules, there are very significant penalties because if these rules aren’t followed, people will die. That’s why there are significant fines.

“If there’s any doubt, simply ask yourself: ‘Do I need to do what I’m doing?’ And if the answer is no, stay at home, preserve the health system and save lives.”

One reporter asked about Health Minister Greg Hunt’s recent remark that police should be more severe with people who are hosting group events and potentially flouting social distancing restrictions.

“I’m not in the business of telling police how to do their job,” the Premier responded. “I’ve given them the power and resources that they need and they will catch you if you’re do the wrong thing. That is the simple message. I’ll leave it to Victoria Police. If they want to describe that behaviour, they’re more than capable of doing that.

“It’s pretty bad behaviour,” the reporter continued.

“And if that’s not the grab that you want for your piece tonight, I’m sorry. But it’s the wrong thing to do and the fines are significant, and you will be caught,” Mr Andrews replied.
