Dr Zac Turner on reality of getting Kim Kardashian’s butt
The Kardashians have made it fashionable to have a bigger, rounder butt. Now a doctor has explained how to get a “perfect” derrière.
Welcome to Ask Doctor Zac, a weekly column from news.com.au.
This week Dr Zac Turner looks at why some people have bigger butts than others – and what you can do to change your bum.
QUESTION: Hi Dr Zac, I’ve been working my ass off to get the perfect butt! My boyfriend revealed to me recently he’s a butt-man and I’ve felt self-conscious ever since because it’s safe to say there is little junk in my trunk. I catch him checking out other women’s butts all the time; it drives me insane.
Nothing I try seems to be working – I can’t get the bums I see on Instagram every day. I’m contemplating whether I should get implants or fat injections. Give it to me straight doc, are some women simply born with it? – Ashley, 28 Gold Coast
ANSWER: Hi Ashley, sorry to burst your bubble, but, yes some women are born with ‘it’. And others pay buttloads to surgically modify their body, to look like they were born with ‘it’. The ‘it’ being a particular body shape which has become essentially a fad. Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, JLO and other Instagram look-alikes all show off their large derrières but I assure you they will be strategically positioned in the photo for maximum size.

Butt implants, and Brazilian butt lifts (BBL), are extremely dangerous. According to The Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, these surgeries have the highest mortality rate out of any other cosmetic procedure, a rate of one in every 3000. And when the fad fades and you want them out, your butt will be permanently saggy like a half-filled bean bag.
My first piece of advice is you must build a positive body image, which means loving yourself and having fun as you keep yourself healthy. Don’t stress over other people’s preferences because they often aren’t based on real people’s bodies. I have one exercise you can do each day for the perfect butt, but first let’s go through why certain women are born with it.
Women, more often, feel the pressure to develop rounder, more sizeable glutes, but many just don’t have the genetics for it. Your body size can largely be changed based on diet and exercise, but shape is more tied up in genetics.

The shapes of the human body are split into three groups: Ectomorph, Endomorph and Mesomorph. Ectomorph is the ballerina, or fashion model body type with a narrow frame and flatter in the chest and butt. Endomorphs are a curvy body type which tends to have more body fat, they gain weight easily and find it hard to lose it. Mesomorph is the athletic build with wide shoulders, narrow waist and low body fat.
Maybe the DNA cards have been stacked against you when it comes to what some people think is a ‘perfectly’ shaped Instagram booty, but let’s flip that conversation around. I believe the perfect butt isn’t one that is aesthetically pleasing, it’s a butt that is strong and healthy. Rather than working out for a well-sculpted butt, workout for perfect butt health.
The exercise you need to do every day for perfect butt health is 20 squat jumps. I want you to start doing this routinely, in the same vein as brushing your teeth each day to keep them nice and strong. Squat jumps are the perfect way to maintain butt strength and flexibility.

There is more value in having a strong, healthy butt than just an attractive one. Stronger glutes provide lots of benefits such as improved posture, improved athletic form, reduced injury risk in movement, and weight loss maintenance. When you’re older, stairs won’t be a problem because you’ve maintained a strong butt. You’ll thank me when you’re 80!
Although it seems the big booty is here to stay, I assure you it is a fad that will fade away. Brazil used to be obsessed with getting the ‘perfect booty’ and butt implants were the number one plastic surgery procedure. However that bubble has well and truly burst and now one of the most popular procedures is getting butt implants removed.
Rather than putting your mental and physical health under stress for a perfect booty, I recommend you simply strive for perfect butt health. Be kind to your bum, it’s the only one you’ve got!
