Douglas McDonald unable to walk two months before wedding after Queensland motorbike crash
A Queensland groom has been involved in a horrific motorbike accident at his buck’s party two months out from his wedding.
“Will I walk again?”
This is the horrifying thought that crossed the mind of a young Queensland groom involved in a horrendous motorbike accident at his buck’s party on Friday, July 14.
Douglas McDonald, 26, was riding motorbikes with around 15 friends and families at a track in the South Burnett region when he crashed while attempting a jump.
With just two months before he weds fiancé Cass Webster there are fears Mr McDonald will be unable to walk down the aisle at his own wedding.
Mr McDonald told The Courier Mail he had ridden motorbikes for most of his life and never been involved in a major accident.
“I was finished the session and my friend whipped out his camera and asked me to go round one more time for a video before we went back to camp,” he said.
Riding his Kawasaki KX450F, he circled back around the track at 4pm for one last jump and “over shot it”.
“I went up way too high and had to bail from the bike in mid air as I was going past the down ramp,” Mr McDonald said.
“I then landed on my arse and broke my back.”
It took over an hour for help to arrive as Mr McDonald lay in agony at the track surrounded by family and friends.
He was flown to Sunshine Coast University Hospital where he remains.
Doctors have told him he will have to wear a brace for a minimum of three months while he learns to walk again.
Rosalind Beaton, the aunt of Cass Webster, said the couple are “shattered” by the accident.
She described Mr McDonald as a “very health focused guy, who loves going to the gym, and works in a physically demanding role as a cabinet maker and carpenter”.
“He has been working every opportunity he could to save for their wedding in September,” she said.
“Now, instead of focusing on their dream wedding, they’re looking at how they’re going to survive the regular day to day bills.”
Ms Beaton has set up a GoFundMe for the couple. To contribute click here.
