Scott Morrison has warned that without getting the three health protections in place that the government announced today – increased testing, more contact tracing and local responses – we risk turning into New York or western Europe.

“Look at New York, London, Spain, all of those places – that could be Australia," he told 7.30. We should not kid ourselves. The success we’ve had at the moment protects us from ending up where they are right now If you don’t keep it under control, it will get away from you quickly and then you’ll have to lock down even harder and the economic costs will be even worse."
Asked if he was concerned about people under the age of 50 "rebelling" against the restrictions, he said: “I can assure you no-one wants these restrictions in any longer than they have to be in. It’s one of the reasons we don’t go for that complete eradication strategy. A, it’s very elusive. And the costs to those livelihoods are very significant, with no real clear additional benefit, at least from what the evidence we’re getting at the moment.
He said it’s about striking a balance.
“You can win the health war and lose the economic war, but you’ve got to deal with both of them at the same time.”
More than 6400 cases of COVID-19 have now been confirmed in Australia, with 2897 in New South Wales, 1301 in Victoria, 1001 in Queensland, 433 in South Australia, 535 in Western Australia, 169 in Tasmania, 103 in the Australian Capital Territory and 28 in the Northern Territory.
The death toll stands at 63, after another former Ruby Princess passenger, a Canberra woman aged in her 60s, died yesterday.
