Abbie Chatfield has responded to concerned fans after they spotted a worrying detail in the star’s loved-up holiday snaps with her new boyfriend.

The outspoken influencer, 29, recently shared a series of photos from her romantic jaunt last month to Mexico with Peking Duk musician Adam Hyde.

While the pair, who only just went public with their romance, look blissfully happy, many fans were quick to notice Hyde appeared sunburnt in the images.

During a recent episode of the LiSTNR podcast,It’s A Lot With Abbie Chatfield, the ARIA winner revealed he’d been diagnosed with skin-cancer diagnosis, with the musician requiring surgery one day after the cancer was detected in his neck.

Some labelled the apparent sunburn “irresponsible” as a result, prompting Chatfield to speak out in a bid to protect her mental health.

“I obviously feel anxious obviously about Adam having skin cancer being taken out and he wasn’t trying to get burnt, wore sunscreen and a shirt most of the day, and we sat in the shade most of the time,” she said in the comments section of her Instagram post.

“I appreciate to a lot of you it’s fun and silly or you’re trying to spread awareness to wear sunscreen, but I think there’s enough comments now for awareness, and it isn’t light hearted to me.

“Unfortunately because I obviously love this man and we were obviously extremely worried about the cancer (that is now gone), it’s just making me spiral instead of enjoying photos from our trip.”

She concluded by asking her 478,000 followers to “refrain from sunburn comments”.

Her decision to publicly comment comes after her post, shared Tuesday evening, was flooded with comments reminding Chatfield and Hyde to wear sunscreen.

“Did he just have a skin cancer cut out and then get burnt red? Oooofffffff,” one wrote.

“Abbie Chatfield’s boyfriend, there’s nothing sexy about a tan,” another shared.

As one bluntly asked: “Abbie chook my sunscreen bestie, how do you feel about Peking Duck Man burnt to a crisp?”

“OMFG I feel so sore looking at that first photo,” mused someone else.

However some defended the pair, calling on critics to “stop” and think about the couple’s wellbeing.

“Some people can slap on the sunscreen every 2 hours, on the dot, and still get burnt (me, I’m some people, so I get it),” one defended.

“Accidents happen, sometimes we get burnt, leave them alone,” said another.

Sunburn is an acute skin inflammation following overexposure to UV radiation, according to Cancer Council Australia.

Symptoms include redness, warmth, accumulation of fluid, and the affected area being tender to the touch. Severe signs of sunburn include pain and blistering while whole body sunburn may result in systemic symptoms such as headaches and nausea.

Skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australia and having a history of sunburn is associated with increased melanoma risk.

The easiest way to avoid sunburn and associated skin cancer risks is to be “sun safe”. This includes wearing clothing that covers as much skin as possible, slapping on SPF and a hat as well as seeking shade and wearing close-fitting wraparound sunglasses.
