A man has made a miraculous recovery from an extremely rare skin condition that left his entire body with flaky, dried skin.

A man has made a miraculous recovery from an extremely rare condition that left his entire body itchy, with inflamed and flaking dried skin.

Jordan Hendey from Queensland had been suffering from a condition known as topical steroid withdrawal (TSW), and shared his recovery on TikTok.

Mr Hendey had previously suffered from eczema his whole life, a more common skin condition, and like many sufferers he used topical steroids to manage his eczema.

His skin started to become extremely dependent on the steroid cream. He became locked into a vicious cycle. He was needing to use it everyday as his eczema became more severe from the dependency.

Mr Hendey eventually had no choice but to stop using steroid cream in order to escape the cycle.

“When it comes to severe eczema, if you’re using topical steroids you have to ask yourself; how often am I using them? Am I able to stop using them?” Mr Hendey said on TikTok

“If you are using them daily, every couple of days even a few times a week there is a high chance if you have severe eczema that you have topical steroid addiction.

“A lot of doctors and dermatologists around the world tend to ignore the evidence out there, that if someone is using steroids daily, weekly even, to maintain their skin they’re ignoring the fact that person is actually dependent on the product and it’s not helping them.”

After taking himself off steroids Mr Hendey’s body had a severe reaction known as TSW.

TSW is a rare condition that can be caused by the overuse of topical steroids.

The most common treatment for TSW is slowly reducing the use of steroid cream and essentially waiting for your body to go back to normal.

It has taken Mr Hendey over a year to return back to some kind of normalcy with his skin, which included him relocating to South East Asia to try and cure his condition.

This time last year Mr Hendey and his girlfriend moved to Bali after the humidity disappeared back home in Queensland.

“All of a sudden the humidity went and it got so bad, my skin was just flaking like it was back at the start,” Mr Hendey said on TikTok.

“Just before we were leaving, I was on the ground in the fetal position and super uncomfortable. So I’m stoked to be here … I’m already starting to feel a lot better.”

Mr Hendey tried swimming for the first time in January. He said on TikTok the pain was “unbearable” and he lasted “two minutes” saying his skin “really suffered” after he exited the water.

He tried again in April and said “it truly felt so much better”.

He is hoping to soon be able “to hang out at the beach and swim in the ocean freely”.
