There have been 51 new cases of coronavirus and seven deaths in Victoria overnight as new data shows Melbourne’s 14-day case average is falling.

Victoria's road map back to 'COVID normal' revealed

There have been 51 new cases of coronavirus diagnosed in Victoria and seven deaths overnight.

Of the seven deaths, there were four men in their 70s, two women in their 80s and one man in his 80s.

31 of Victoria’s new cases are still under investigation, and there were no new cases in regional Victoria overnight.

Thursday’s numbers are a significant decrease from Wednesday, where there were 76 new cases and 11 deaths.

It also tracks well for Melbourne, as new data from the Department of Health and Human Services shows Melbourne’s 14-day average is on the decline.

The 14-day case average for metropolitan Melbourne fell to 74.5 on Wednesday, down from 84.8 on Monday.

On Thursday, Metro Melbourne’s 14-day average sat at 70.1.

If the average of new cases is between 30 and 50 by September 28, the city will be able to move to the next step out of lockdown.

This would mean public gatherings could increase to five people from two households, childcare would reopen and prep to year 2 and year 11 and 12 students could gradually return to classrooms.

The number of workplaces permitted to open would also increase, allowing more people to go back to work.

Victoria’s coronavirus death toll now stands at 701.
