NSW health minister flags critical quarantine and testing combo for combating COVID-19

There have been 10 new cases of coronavirus diagnosed in NSW up to 8pm on Tuesday as the government announces more restrictions will be eased.

Only two of the new cases were locally acquired, and both have been linked to the Great Beginnings childcare centre at Oran Park. The remaining eight cases were returned travellers in hotel quarantine.

“The cases we are getting are off the known clusters and that's very good. But it still keeps us on high alert,” NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said.

Mr Hazzard fronted reporters alongside the state’s Treasurer, Dominic Perrottet, to announce two areas where COVID-19 restrictions will be softening.

Religious services will be allowed to host 300 people from Friday, subject to some restrictions such as QR codes being used to keep a record of attendees.

And gyms will no longer be required to have a COVID marshall on site at all times, provided there are less than 20 people using the facility.

Announcing the new cases on Wednesday, deputy chief health officer Jeremy McAnulty said the the community transmissions were both close contacts of a confirmed case linked to the centre.

The new numbers mean the Oran Park community cluster now sits at 22.

A new health alert has been issued for the Bavarian Macarthur at Macarthur Square, 200 Gilchrist Drive, Campbelltown.

Anyone who was inside the restaurant on Saturday, October 10 from 7pm to 9pm is considered a close contact and must immediately get tested and isolate for 14 days, regardless of whether a negative result is received.

Those who dined outside the restaurant or were there for less than an hour are considered casual contacts and must monitor for symptoms and get tested immediately if they develop.

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet and Health Minister Brad Hazzard will address media at midday on Wednesday to discuss the further easing of restrictions in NSW.

From Friday, 30 people will be able to gather outdoors in public places, up from 20.

In restaurants and pubs, booking limits and table limits will be increased from 10 to 30, and weddings will now be able to go ahead with a maximum of 300 people - subject to there being 4 square metres of space for every person indoors, or two for every person outdoors.

Businesses enjoying the relaxed restrictions must use electronic methods, such as a QR code, to keep a record of their guests’ contact details.
