‘Yes’ for Equality campaign launches ads asking for community support towards same-sex marriage

DESPITE today’s ruling in favour of the Federal Government, the Yes campaign for same-sex marriage has come armed with a new ad.

THE equality campaign is powering on with its battle to legalise same-sex marriage with a new TV ad calling on Aussies to commit their support to the LGBTI community.

The ad — which will air on Sky News nationally from today and will roll out across all commercial networks across the country over the weekend — features the reaction of “residents” from an Australian suburb: a tradie, a sister, a mother, a lesbian couple, a priest and more.

“It’s about a fair go,” says one.

“Everyone should be treated equally,” responds another.

“It’s about everyone having the same choices.”

The ad finishes with the group of “neighbours” submitting their postal votes via a post box.

“We know that the Australian people support marriage equality but no one can be complacent — it is all about getting as many surveys returned as possible,” said Tiernan Brady, Executive Director of The Equality Campaign.

The ad features various nationalities and of Australians to prove its point.

“We call on everyone to participate and to talk to their family and friends to make sure they do too. Together, let’s get this done,” Tiernan Brady concluded.

Billboards for the new campaign are expected to begin rolling out across the nation by the end of the week.

It comes after the High Court threw out a challenge that argued against the postal survey on same-sex marriage, paving the way for a national vote on whether such unions should be legalised.

Last month, the Coalition for Marriage launched its own ad which pushed the message, “You can say no.”

The “No” ad featured Australian mothers who argued they could lose control of gender programs taught to their children in schools under the proposed legislation.

The “No” advertisement triggered a hostile response from opposition leader Bill Shorten, who described it as “total ­rubbish (and) ... offensive and hurtful to LGBTI Australians and their families”.

“This is not freedom of speech. This is freedom to hurt,” he said.

“This is exactly what was predicted when Malcolm Turnbull decided to waste $122 million on a postal survey.”
