ALL eyes were on Matty J and the lady who won his heart, but it was an ad during The Bachelor finale that stole his thunder.

AUSTRALIA is still a little emotionally fragile after Matty J’s decision last night to boot Tara in the penultimate episode of The Bachelor.

So the strategic decision by the ‘yes’ campaign to air a specially crafted same-sex marriage advertisement smack bang in the middle of tonight’s finale hit already raw hearts.

In it, real-life gay couples are shown on their wedding days surrounded by family and friends, set to a remake of the Crowded House classic Don’t Dream It’s Over.

“For every Bachelor and Bachelorette, vote yes,” it reads at the end.

Twitter and Facebook quickly lit up with reaction to the emotive commercial, which was also uploaded simultaneously to social media.

“I just saw this ad on during The Bachelor ... I am in tears. As an ally, I just want my rainbow friends to have the same rights as me,” Debs Ward wrote.

While Zoe Davis wrote: “Congrats on a beautiful ad. Real tears of happiness.”

The ‘no’ campaign’s ad, featuring mothers sharing their concern about the so-called “slippery slope” of marriage equality, also aired during the finale.

It attracted controversy earlier this month when one of the woman’s claims that her son was encouraged to wear a dress to school was denied by his principal.
