Cult US burger chain Mr Charlies is opening in Australia

There has been a surprising reaction to the arrival of a cult US burger joint Down Under, with many furious about its location.

‘Un-Australian’: New Macca’s burger slammed

Parts of Australia’s vegan community has been left outraged after a cult US burger chain chose to make Sydney its home.

Mr Charlie’s is a vegan burger restaurant with stores in Los Angeles and San Francisco. It has been dubbed the vegan Macca’s.

The chain announced on social media there would be a store opening in the central Sydney suburb of Redfern at the end of this month.

“There are some places in the world that just leave an impression, Sydney is one of those places for us,” the social media post read.

“The energy of the city is vibrant and fresh, while the heart beat is pure and kind.

“Sydney is the vegan capital of Australia, with it having the most vegan products available, but many from Melbourne were outraged with the decision.”

But some on social media were not happy.

“Oh man you picked wrong it should have been Melbourne,” one social media user commented.

Another said: “Noooo! Come to Melbourne instead!”

“Please come to Melbourne too,” one social media user begged.

Another social media user commented about the news: “Sydney and not Melbourne? That’s a weird choice.”

“Melbourne > Sydney plus we can afford to be regular customers as our cost of living isn’t so absurd,” another Instagram user commented.

Mr Charlie’s revealed the reason they chose Sydney — and specifically Redfern — for their first foray Down Under.

“We are excited to share that in just a few short weeks we will be opening our doors in the heart of Redfern,” the social media user commented.

“Why Redfern? Because we are a company on a mission to create change, and where better to start than by aiding our Indigenous communities.

“We are proud to be teaming up with some incredible charities and brand partners who are creating opportunity for the Aboriginal people.”

The restaurant is set to open in a few weeks.
