Locals and tourists alike have been mystified by a hidden rooftop bar in a very highly unlikely spot, but bookworms may already know about it.

Western Sydney's Secret Bars

Sydneysiders have been shocked to learn that there’s a secret bar hidden on top of the country’s oldest library.

Perched on top of the State Library of NSW‘s historic Mitchell building, The Library Bar boasts picturesque views of both the Sydney Harbour and the city skyline.

Locals and travellers have been blown away by the 360 degree vistas and the cosy aura of mystery that surrounds the open air venue – but they have to find it before they can enjoy it.

The entrance to the bar is hidden behind two towering wooden arch doors, and guests have to navigate their way through the bowels of the library before being transported up to the rooftop by an old goods lift.

While the bar has been open since last year, it’s recently begun to attract attention as travellers and locals alike rave about the “hidden gem”.

Sydney blogger, Evelien Langeveld, shared her experience at the “beautiful secret” bar in a viral social media video.

“This one’s such a gem and so well-hidden we had to ask the library staff for directions,” she captioned the video.

Hundreds of people flooded the comments to express their amazement that such a great bar had managed to stay hidden.

“Just stumbled upon this awesome bar a few weeks ago and now we‘re itching to go back,” one follower said.

“We loved the vibes, and to top it off, they had a delightful live jazz concert when we visited. Also the staff was absolutely amazing! Can‘t wait to go back.”

While the stunning views are the biggest drawcard for the secret bar, there are also live music performances and a semi-regular trivia night for library-goers to flex their mental muscles.

In keeping with its location on a state landmark, The Library Bar drinks and food menu choose to champion local ingredients and producers.

“Our menu showcases the best NSW has to offer,” the official Instagram page declares.

What was once a staff cafe for library employees has now become a coveted destination for watching the sunset with a cocktail or listening to an intimate music performance.

The venue can accommodate up to 120 people across the fairylight-adorned open air courtyard and cosy inside bar.

Judging by the surge of social media attention, it won’t stay under the radar for long.

“Let’s gooo,” one social media commenter wrote.

“Ready for action,” another promised.
