THE latest episode of restaurant receipt rage has taken a political turn in the battle over immigration.
After serving a customer at Bamboo Thai Bistro in Redondo Beach, California, an Asian waitress received a short note scribbled on the receipt instead of a tip, according to NBC Los Angeles.
It read, “Tip for US citizens only.”
The waitress is from Thailand and in the US legally on a visa with the hope of obtaining a green card one day.
According to NBC, on November 11 a male diner paid for his meal of kung pao spaghetti that totalled $22.84 which would have meant the waitress got $3.43. But after discovering the nasty note, it’s believed another diner snapped a photo of the receipt, which included the man’s name — and posted it online.
Since then, the a picture has gone viral, including posts from YouTube starlet Gina Darling who shared the story.
According to NBC, the server’s co-workers said the believe the note was a “mean spirited way to express anger over the hot button issue of immigration.”
But after the incident, there’s been an outpouring of support for the waitress, who was not named.
“She’s one of the best employees here in my opinion,” restaurant manager Adison Karnsomport told NBC Los Angeles. “It’s disgusting.”
The restaurant manager says customers have been showing their support for the waitress by leaving large tips and leaving kind notes on their receipts.
“They’re really generous and, like, actually reaching out to us,” Karnsomport said of his customers. The restaurant says that it will donate the money is has raised.
