Popular children’s drink recalled over choking fears
An urgent recall has been issued for a flavoured drink product amid fears it could cause serious injury or even death.
An urgent recall has been issued for a popular kids drink from stores nationally amid fears it could cause serious injury or death.
Surprise 5 Flavoured Drink 250mL with Toy Watch has been pulled from supermarkets, petrol stations and independent stores across Australia by the manufacturer Steel City Beverage Company.
The product’s specially designed bottle contains a toy which has unsecured button batteries.
“The product does not comply with mandatory safety protocols for products containing button batteries,” Product Safety Australia revealed in a statement.
“If swallowed, a button/coin battery can become stuck in a child’s throat and result in catastrophic injuries or death. Inserting button batteries into ears or noses can also lead to significant injuries.
“Button batteries also pose a choking hazard to young children.”
The drinks were available for sale in supermarkets, petrol stations and independent stores between June 1 and October 28, 2022.
Product Safety Australia has advised consumers to “immediately stop using the product and keep it out of reach of children and contact”.
“Contact Steel City Beverage Company for a replacement or refund,” it advised.
The Major suppliers of the drink were Funland Canberra in Mitchell in the ACT, Lollipop’s Playland and Cafe in Majura Park in the ACT, Ho’me Kids Cafe in Rhodes, NSW, Yalla Yalla in Sefton, NSW and Donut King in Goulburn, NSW.
