‘May cause injury’: Big Shed Brewing beer brand recalled

Another beer brand has been recalled after concerns excess alcohol in the can could cause to illness or injury.

A popular brand of craft beer has been recalled with warnings it could cause “injury” if drunk.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ), the government body that monitors food safety, issued the recall on Friday for Big Shed Brewing’s mango sour beer.

The beer, which is sold in Australia, is being recalled due to secondary fermentation. Several other beer brands have also been recalled due to the same issue in recent months.

During fermentation in beer, substances like yeast break down the sugars into alcohol. Secondary fermentation is where this process continues in the can.

The beer was produced by Adelaide’s Big Shed Brewing. PIC TAIT SCHMAAL.

That can create higher – potentially dangerous – levels of alcohol and carbon dioxide.

“Food products containing excess alcohol and carbonation may cause illness/injury if consumed,” said FSANZ in a statement.

“Consumers should not drink or open this product, and should dispose of it safely.”

Only cans of Big Shed Brewing mango sour beer with a best before date of 7 September 2023 are affected.

Big Shed Brewing is based in Adelaide. The product was sold in bars and independent bottle shops in New South Wales, the ACT, Queensland and South Australia as well as online nationally.

In March, some batches of Your Mates Brewing Co’s watermelon sour beer were also recalled due to secondary fermentation problems.

Your Mates took to social media to inform its customers of the issue.

However, as of Saturday morning, Big Shed Brewing had failed to mention the recall on its website or social media pages.

Just this week, the Gold Coast’s Fortitude Brewing Company had to withdraw a batch of its Pacer beer with best before dates between 15 February and 16 February 2024.

It too did not appear to publicise the recall on its social media accounts.

FSANZ said customers should contact Big Shed Brewing for a refund.
