‘Worth it’: $27 Aldi item catching people’s attention

A Louisiana-born meat creation costing less than $30 has unexpectedly captured Australian hearts, becoming an essential part of celebrations.

Aldi special buys fails to excite shoppers

A $27 “novelty” item has become a staple of Aussie tables over the years, with many saying it is “worth the money”.

Aldi has unveiled its 2025 Christmas offerings and among them was the $26.99 a kilogram Specially Selected Turducken Roast with Bacon Lattice.

The Turducken — which is a deboned chicken stuffed inside a deboned duck inside of a deboned turkey — was created in Louisiana in the 1970s.

It’s often hailed as probably the most American dish of all time, but recently it’s started popping up on Australian tables at Christmas.

Kylie Warnke, Aldi Australia’s shopping expert, told news.com.au that it was the product she was most looking forward to seeing released in 2025.

“With the range of products we have this year it’s hard to choose. We do have a brand new Specially Selected Fresh Turducken Roast in Bacon Lattice with a Christmas pudding inspired stuffing landing in stores close to Christmas that is incredible,” she told news.com.au.

“A Good Different product that will definitely spark up a conversation round the dinner table.”

Aldi offers both fresh and frozen options for the turducken, with various stuffing combinations such as cranberry, with the products having built quite a following, Ms Warnke said.

“What started as a bit of a novelty for some customers has turned into a festive favourite, with many customers now making it a staple in their Christmas spread,” she said.

She’s not wrong — people definitely rave about the product.

“We love this. Discovered it at Aldi three years ago and now it’s a family staple at Christmas time,” one social media user said.

Another said: “Hubby and I didn’t like it, but my 11yr old keeps asking when we can get another one.”

“We have had one the last few years. It’s def worth buying,” another added.

One added: “We bought it last year. Much better value than the ones from the butcher. Everyone enjoyed it, plan on getting one this year.”

“It’s great. We have one in our spare freezer now as we buy two every year – one for Xmas and one for another gathering or just because! We are two adults and have got three meals out of it in the past. I wouldn’t hesitate if you love turkey and duck,” one said.

However, others took issue with how much duck was actually in it, complaining there was “very little”.

Products for the Christmas range are years in the making — with a 30-month aged pudding in this years’ offerings being in the works since 2022.

Fan favourites such as the lobster tails, the extra large maple bacon wrapped scallops and the sweet plum and Australian honey glaze ham are set to return.

The range is all about “easing the Christmas planning for shoppers and reducing time spent in the kitchen by offering a range of convenient and ready-to-cook or serve options”.

“One of the key trends throughout the year, but especially around the festive season is convenience. Australians are looking to entertain without the stress, and our freezer aisle has the Christmas menu covered,” Ms Warnke said.

From bite-sized turkey kyivs to a full roast, Aussies can deliver Christmas luxury without the accompanying stress.

“The humble pistachio has also had a huge year thanks to that Dubai chocolate craze, so we’re bringing back our Pistachio Panettone along with five new panettone flavours including a limoncello version that is likely to be a real hit.”
