Woolworths, Anya Hindmarch collab being resold on eBay

A designer $20 tote available to buy at select Woolworths stores has been spotted being resold for more than three times the price.

'Land banking': Coles and Woolworths creating a 'local monopoly' in remote areas

A designer $20 tote being sold at a major Australian supermarket has been spotted being resold for more than three times the price.

Woolworths recently started stocking the Anya Hindmarch product The Universal Bag, which retails for $20 and is available at 600 stores nationwide.

It's the latest edition of the Universal Bag, which sits in 20 stores such as UK supermarket Sainsbury’s and ASDA, as well as US brand Whole Foods Market.

However since it’s release last week, the green bag has started popping up on eBay with one person selling it for three times the price. One listing, which was offering the tote for $50, had close to 30 people view it in the last 24 hours. The lowest price it was available for on eBay was $39.

A Woolworths spokesperson has slammed the reselling of the bag, which is external to its typical 25 cent, 99 cent reusable bags and chiller bags.

“We are aware of the unauthorised resale of the Anya Hindmarch Universal Bag,” a Woolworths spokesperson told news.com.au.

“We do not encourage the resale of these items. It is clearly unacceptable and does not meet our expectations, and those of the wider community.”

People have been torn about the bags, with popular content creator Foodie Mumma Ren asking people if they would buy one.

“In a cost of living crisis, who the heck can afford $20 for a bloody shopping bag. Not forgetting that long before all the food and product increases they were free,” one said.

Another added: “LOL no chance. I’m still the person having to buy bags every time I run into the shop because I forget to take in 1 of the 27,000 in my boot.”

“Not a chance. $20 can feed my family with the basics for a few days. The Coles $15 ones didn’t sell not sure why Woolies think these ones will,” another commented.

But, others are clearly fans and have raved about them on social media — including influencer Phoebe Burgess, who took to Instagram on Friday to reveal she was “obsessed” with her new supermarket accessory.

The 36-year-old waved her green bag around while enjoying a morning stroll.

“It’s available at the Woolies checkout, no joke,” she said as she carried around colourful towels in her bag.

“I’m obsessed with mine.”

It’s been seven years since Coles and Woolworths stopped offering shoppers free single-use plastic bags. Since then, an array of different “bags for life” have been available in various designs.

Both supermarket giants also sell 100 per cent recycled brown paper bags at their check-outs for those who forget to bring theirs from home.

Anya Hindmarch is well versed at collaborating with supermarket chains, with The Universal Bag – which comes with a 10-year guarantee – already stocked in British supermarket’s Asda, Co-op, Morrisons, Sainsburys and Waitrose as well as in bougie food retailers Selfridges Food Hall and Whole Foods UK.

It’s also available in select stores in Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore, with more retailers expected to be added to the global line-up this year.

“The Universal Bag project has saved over 230 tonnes of virgin plastic from landfill to date, the equivalent weight of over 19 London double decker buses,” Anya Hindmarch, Founder and Creative Director, said.

“Plastic pollution remains a pressing environmental issue but working together with major global food retailers shows how the solution needs to be collaborative.”
