Woman’s pantry photo sparks heated debate

An Aussie woman’s pantry photo has sparked a big debate online on whether a certain product belongs in the pantry or in the fridge.

Pantry makeover goes viral on TikTok

An Aussie woman has sparked a huge debate online after sharing a snap of her perfectly organised pantry.

After reorganising the space, she took to a Facebook organising group to proudly show it off – and while some were left extremely impressed by her skills, others couldn’t help but notice an item they believed belonged in the fridge.

“Pantry organising day!” she captioned the snap on the Cleaning & Organising Inspiration Australia page.

“I would advise if you want to organise your supplies, then you need to pull everything out of your pantry, assess and reorganise.”

Her post sparked a wild debate with hundreds of people noticing that among items such as tinned foods, spices and sauces, there were also two cartons of eggs.

“Now you just need to put the eggs in the fridge and get some Tupperware,” one woman criticised.

A second agreed: “Eggs in the pantry! This is NOT OK.”

A third suggested that maybe the “egg cartons are empty” and pointed out that “eggs go off seven times quicker at room temperature compared to a fridge”.

But not everyone agreed, with many – including an egg farmer – jumping to the woman’s defence.

“I’m an egg farmer. Fresh eggs store on shelf for four weeks, six weeks in the fridge,” they said. “They are very stable as long as not stored in a hot place or in sunlight.”

Fridge or pantry: Who is right?

So, where do eggs actually need to be stored?

According to Australian consumer organisation Choice, eggs don’t need to go in the fridge, but they will last longer if that’s where they’re stored.

“If they’ve been washed or refrigerated before (for instance, at the supermarket) then they should also go in your fridge at home,” it states on its site.

“Leave the eggs in their cardboard cartons (not in the egg holders in your fridge door) to stop condensation building up.

“The carton also helps stop eggs absorbing odours from the rest of the fridge, and is a good reminder of the use-by date.”

Also, if you like to wash your eggs with water, Choice advises against that, adding shells are porous and doing so may encourage the growth of bacteria.
