Why you can’t find Malteser Bunny chocolates anywhere
The widespread hunt for a beloved chocolate only available during the festive season has revealed a devastating truth for fans.
A popular sweet treat has become one of the most sought after supermarket items throughout the Easter period — but there’s a reason no one can find it on shelves.
The Maltesers Bunny is a widespread favourite during the festive season, and social media users have been documenting their journey searching for the chocolate bunny.
Ali Smith took to TikTok to say she was “sad”, “frustrated”, “annoyed” and “disappointed” she hadn’t been able to find it anywhere.
“Where are the Malteser Bunnies? It is almost Easter time and I have not seen a single Malteser Bunny anywhere,” she told her social media followers.
“It’s my favourite part of Easter.”
She pointed out that the KitKat Bunny and the Malteser Bunny looked very similar, but she was only after the latter as the KitKat version didn’t “hit the same”.
The TikTok user’s followers rushed to tell her where they had spotted the Malteser Bunnies in store. She even offered $100 for just one of the chocolate treats.
In the end, Ali attempted to make her own version of the bunny.
Fellow content creator Adele Maree has also been looking for the festive item, taking to TikTok to reveal a “very, very sad PSA”.
“Anyone who has messaged me saying they have found the Malteser Bunny we have very quickly realised that they’re actually the KitKat ones,” she said.
“For some reason they look identical.”
She said she didn’t think the Malteser Bunny could be found anywhere in Australia, and was feeling very “disheartened”.
She eventually received a message from her boyfriend’s mum who found the coveted items outside of Australia and bought Adele a bunch, saying this was everyone’s best hope at also getting their hands on one.
A spokesperson from Mars Wrigley, which manufactures Maltesers, confirmed to news.com.au that the popular treat was in fact no longer available Down Under.
“Maltesers Bunny was previously imported from Europe and like many Australian businesses importing products from overseas, we are experiencing rising cost-pressures and supply challenges,” a spokesperson told news.com.au.
“Last year, we made the difficult decision to discontinue availability of Maltesers Bunny in Australia.
“However, we know Maltesers Bunny is a much-loved Easter treat and therefore we are currently reviewing options to potentially reintroduce in the future.”
Other social media users have expressed their disappointment at the news.
“I definitely confused the Kit Kat ones for the Malteser ones. I bought some and was so disappointed when I got home,” one social media user said.
Another added: “Bought a few today in Melbourne and some last week from another store. They are around still! For now anyway.”
“IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THEM EVERYWHERE FOR THE LEAST 2 YEARS,” someone else lamented.
