Viral TikTok video reveals Aldi’s spanakopita is ‘best-kept secret’
The cheap and cheerful item which saw a buying frenzy last year is back – and it’s been labelled so good one shopper admits to “hoarding boxes” of it.
Aldi’s $7 spanakopita has been labelled the supermarket’s “best-kept secret” – and it’s not just because of the price.
In a TikTok video that’s since gone viral, Sydney foodie @mernasfoodfomo shared why she loves the Aldi buy, adding that she will “usually hoard boxes” of the product.
With overseas travel off the tables until at least next year because of coronavirus, Aldi’s spanakopita might be the closest Aussies get to eating the real deal in Greece.
“I’m going to share a little secret with you,” Merna explains in the video. “It’s this spanakopita from Aldi and it’s made in Greece.”

Merna said the spanakopita from Aldi’s freezer aisle was “so easy” to make into a delicious meal as all you needed to do was pop it into the oven at 180 degrees and cook for 40 minutes.
“Honestly this is Aldi’s best kept secret, I usually hoard boxes of this,” she said, before sharing the “most satisfying shots” of the cooked product.
“It’s beautiful, buttery and crunchy on the outside and then you’ve got this gorgeous spinach and ricotta mix on the inside,” Merna said.
“It’s so fun to eat. Anyway, you’ll thank me, trust me, yum.”
It seems plenty of people agreed with Merna, with the video racking up more than 35,000 views from fans of the product, who jokingly chastised the TikTok user for giving away their “secret”.

“Why did you show this, everyone one is going to take them now lol,” one person commented, while another added: “What are you doing they’re hard enough to get them, they are awesome.”
Others said the Aldi spanakopita usually “sells out” at their local store and was better than homemade versions.
“They are the best. Not worth me making,” one person commented, while another added:
“It’s the best but it sells out almost as soon as it hits Aldi freezers.”
Aldi’s spanakopita has appeared in stores as limited edition item over the last few years and has proved popular with shoppers.
After disappearing from shelves after its short term run last year, Aldi’s spanakopita and cheese tiropita have returned to stores this month this time as part of the supermarket’s permanent offerings.
Aldi’s spanakopita isn’t the only sought-after item returning to stores, with McCain’s Potato Smiles back in supermarkets after a five year hiatus.

EmotiBites are the new updated version of Potato Smiles based on – you guessed it – emojis.
You can now feel a range of emotions as you tuck into the potato treat from happy to sad, shocked and even a little devilish.
The updated Potato Smiles got the tick of approval from fans, with most glad to see them back in any form.
“Don’t ever take them away again!” one person wrote on McCain’s Facebook page, while another rather passionate fan commented: “NO ONE UNDERSTANDS HOW MUCH I LOVE AND NEED THIS WOW.”
Others reminisced on eating the snacks as kids and one person tagged a friend and wrote,
“Remember you loving smileys from the primary school canteen.”
McCain said they had decided to bring back Potato Smiles due to overwhelming demand for the tasty treat.
More than 50 per cent of the requests on the brand’s Facebook page were to bring back Potato Smiles.
