‘Unusual’ hot cross bun predicted to be huge hit in Coles stores
It’s the treat shoppers can’t seem to get enough of with 25 million sold since December and Coles has taken it up a notch with a new “unusual” flavour.
If you like a little spice, then you’re in for a treat.
Coles has taken its hot cross bun variety to a whole new — heated — level with the release of its jalapeño flavoured bun.
While it may sound a little strange, Coles’ bakery boss said judging by the success of its savoury buns, the same response is expected for the fiery new flavour.
“The new jalapeño and cheese flavour might be an unusual choice in a hot cross bun, but judging by the phenomenal success our limited edition Vegemite hot cross buns were last month, savoury hot cross buns are the new craze,” Coles general manager of bakery, deli and seafood, Andy Mossop, said.
“We will always have our traditional fruit and chocolate varieties, but it’s important to differentiate and offer those who prefer savoury options a new and exciting hot cross bun too.”

The limited-edition jalapeño hot cross bun is the latest flavour mash-up to roll out of the
Coles Bakery following the hyper-popular, savoury sensation of Vegemite hot cross buns, which sold out quickly after arriving in stores in December.
The fiery new flavour, in stores now, was inspired by Coles’ Bakery Stone Baked by Laurent Mini Pane Di Casa range, whose jalapeño loaf has been a hit with customers.
Using the unique flavour profile of the jalapeño, the limited-edition bun is described as peppered with diced jalapeño, parmesan, and tasty cheese, and finished off with an extra layer of tasty cheese.
“We took a risk with our first-ever savoury vegemite hot cross bun edition and customers absolutely loved them, so we knew we had to spice things up with our latest range,” Mr Mossop said.
“Each year we like to have a little fun when it comes to new flavour combos so we can give our customers something special they can only get at Coles. But ultimately it has to taste great too.”
He said the bakery team spent months finetuning and taste-testing the new bun “to ensure the right mix of sweet and savoury was achieved”.
“We’re confident our customers will love it just as much as they did the previous
new flavours such as Vegemite, lamington, and sticky date pudding hot cross buns.”
Mr Mossop said the buns are best served toasted and slathered in butter, morning, noon, and night.
Also joining the hot new addition is the fan-favourite White Chocolate and Raspberry hot cross buns.
The Coles jalapeño hot cross buns are $3.50 for a pack of four.
Coles has sold more than 25 million buns since December, which is enough to feed the entire population of Australia.
Early demand for hot cross buns continues with Coles reporting a 10 per cent increase in popularity compared to the same period last year.
