A humble hole-in-the-wall sandwich shop in Sydney’s eastern suburbs has snagged the title of Australia’s best sanger.

South Dowling Sandwiches in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst took out the top spot for “Best Sanga” in travel website Wotif’s “Uniquely Aussie Awards” after a public vote.

The shop has been open for more than two decades and was taken over 14 years ago by current owner Avi Labi, who revamped it into the cult lunch spot it is today.

According to Mr Labi, the shop’s most popular sandwich is “The Biatch”, which was affectionately named after his daughter.

“It’s spicy, like my daughter,” he told Channel 7.

“But it’s so, so, so good, so delicious, one of my favourite sandwiches.”

The $15 sandwich comes stuffed with chilli chicken, red pesto, herb mayo, lettuce, rocket, pickles, red cabbage, bocconcini and South Dowling Sandwiches’s signature caramelised carrots.

“Many people (have) tried to copy it, but they’re not even coming close to it. People love it,” Mr Labi added.

South Dowling Sandwiches also has locations in Alexandria and Millers Point. Mr Labi said it was an “honour” to win the title.

“Our team … are giving so much love into our food, and our customers are return customers daily and we appreciate it from them that they voted for us,” he said.

Wotif’s Uniquely Aussie Awards encouraged Australians to nominate their favourite businesses across a host of categories. The business that received the most nominations was crowned the winner of that category.

ACT cafe The Cupping Room won best flat white, while Felons Brewing Co in Queensland was voted best brewery.

The best botanic garden was won by the Western Australian Botanic Garden in Perth’s Kings Park.

“The categories this year really encompass what Aussies are most passionate about, from delicious foodie experiences to breathtaking natural wonders and scenery,” Wotif managing director Daniel Finch said.

“These are the simple yet essential experiences that make a local trips spectacular and unforgettable.”
