Sydney Woolworth’s dubbed ‘fanciest’ in Australia over cheese room

A Woolworths store in Sydney’s east has left people green with envy after a video revealed it had a “secret” room at the back.

Supermarkets appear to be upping the ante when it comes to choice and style.

A Woolworths store in Sydney’s eastern suburbs has been dubbed the “fanciest in Australia” thanks to its dedicated “cheese room”.

Video taken inside the Woolies in Double Bay shows a chilled room stacked from floor to ceiling with various varieties of cheese.

“The Woolworths in Double Bay is the fanciest in Australia,” the clip, shared on TikTok by user Ryan Paturzo, begins.

He then goes on to list many of the different types of cheeses on offer as the camera pans across wheels and wheels of the stuff.

“Parmesan, brie, goats, Gruyère, Edam, Mozzarella...” he says, adding there was everything from soft to smoked and multiple blues.

“You name it, it’s in here.”

Understandably, excitement – and a bit of jealousy – has caused the video to capture a lot of attention online since it was shared on Saturday.

Some users said they went to this branch regularly and had never found the “secret” door – which Ryan said was at the back.

“Since when does Double Bay have a cheese room?” one said.

“Since forever,” the creator replied.

Others said their “mind had been blown” by the revelation and described the swish glass room as “pretty”.

“I wish my local Woolies was like this,” one said.

“Every Woolworths should be like this...” another added.

Woolworths Double Bay store manager Matthew Walsh told news.com.au the feature had proved “popular” with customers during the six years it had been open.

“We know sometimes it can be a challenge picking the right cheese when entertaining, so most mornings and weekends we have a cheesemonger available to help customers pick the cheese that best suits the occasion, or cut different shapes and styles,” he said.

The only other Woolworths to offer a “cheese room” is Warringah Mall in NSW, which many TikTok users pointed out on the video.

The Double Bay store also offers a sit down cafe, fresh bakery, full sushi production, a butcher shop, fresh seafood, a deli with a variety of olives, salads.

While you won’t find any other dedicated chillers full of cheese for customers anywhere else, Woolworths has added “cheese caves” to four locations: Marrickville Metro and Northbridge in Sydney, Racecourse Village Ascot in Brisbane, and Camberwell in Melbourne.

“The demand for cheese at Woolworths stores across Australia has skyrocketed over the past four weeks, increasing by more than 31 per cent, due to states loosening social distancing restrictions and allowing more households to entertain,” Woolworths Category Manager for Specialty Cheese, Annabel Yum, told news.com.au.

A new Coles down the road has also opened with a bunch of exciting features, including a candy bar …

There’s also a dessert station which has mochi …

Recently, Coles opened a new store just down the road in Rose Bay, which has captured similar attention.

Sydney’s first Coles Local comes equipped with a pasta station, fresh orange juicer and bread slicing machine.

There’s also a candy bar as well as a mochi, macaron and gelato station.

We’re not sure if these fancy upgrades will be rolled out at other supermarkets in Australia, but we certainly hope so.
