Supermarkets bring back popular $22 Easter deal after frenzy

Coles and Woolworths have cut the price of an expensive grocery item after the supermarket giants said customers demanded “value”.

It’s the deal that caused chaos when it first launched – and now Coles has announced it is bringing back the popular offer.

The supermarket giant has dropped the price of Western Australia rock lobsters to $22, down from $27 each, to help lower the cost of Easter celebrations.

Woolworths has followed suit, confirming to news.com.au it will be offering the same deal on the luxury seafood item for the next two weeks, until Tuesday, April 19.

Coles said its price drop, which runs from Wednesday until stock runs out, comes in response to a customer survey which determined shoppers were looking for “great value seafood” over the long weekend.

Consumption of seafood always increases during the Easter period as a result of families following age-old traditions, with Coles predicting a 200 per cent increase this year.

According to the 8500 Australians who participated in the supermarket’s survey, two-thirds of Aussies follow Easter traditions each year, with lunch being the most popular time to eat their Easter meal.

Coles general manager for bakery, deli and seafood Andy Mossop said it’s important to reflect on customer sentiments as Coles heads into the second-busiest period of the year.

“We know it’s been a challenging few years for many Australians, and it’s important to understand what our customers are feeling to ensure we can provide the best value and quality on products they need most this Easter,” he said.

“With Easter just over a week away, we are ready for a massive week of seafood sales.

“We’re delighted to be able to make great quality and responsibly sourced Australian seafood like WA Rock Lobsters more affordable so our customers can treat themselves over the long weekend.”

Woolworths seafood buyer Hamish Allen told news.com.au it was important to offer customers “value” during major holidays like Christmas and Easter.

“Our team has been working closely with suppliers in WA to ensure customers across the country can enjoy quality lobster as part of their Easter spread at a competitive price,” he said.

As well as the whole lobsters, Coles shoppers can pick up a 3kg box of extra large black tiger prawns for $75 per box, down from $102 per box, while fresh Tasmanian salmon with the skin on will cost $29/kg.

Coles Deli raw banana prawns are also down to $23/kg from $26/kg.

If you prefer to tuck into that other classic Easter fare, hot cross buns, you’re also in luck as Coles has shaved a $1 off a dozen, offering two of the $3.50 six-packs for $6.

When the lobster offer was first introduced in December 2020, Coles and Woolworths caused a customer frenzy that saw the supermarkets forced to introduce buying limits.

The deal has since returned several times in the last 18 months in response to its popularity.
