Road Test: The Low Carb SuperBun burger from Grill’d
GRILL’D have launched a low carb burger made of eggs, almond meal, organic coconut cream, honey, tapioca flour and psyllium husk. So how does it taste?
WOULD you eat a low carb burger? And more importantly, would you enjoy it?
Grill’d have today launched the world’s first ever low carb restaurant burger, which it says has less carbs than a sushi roll.
The “Low Carb SuperBun” is what sets this burger apart. Made of eggs, almond meal, organic coconut cream, honey, tapioca flour and psyllium husk, it has less than ten per cent carbs per 100 grams, and is available with any of Grill’d’s usual burgers options.
“The Low Carb SuperBun was developed to make our menu even healthier and to enable us to cater for people following a specific diet or lifestyle choice, giving them permission to shop the burger category in a premium, contemporary and healthy way,” explains Simon Crowe, Founder of Grill’d.
Sounds fair enough, but how does it actually taste?
News.com.au tried the burgers before their launch to the public, and “delicious” “it’s very sweet” and “I like it” were heard around the office. I myself quite enjoyed it, and I wasn’t left with that heavy feeling I often get after eating a burger.
“This burger shows that flavour does not have to be sacrificed to meet special dietary needs,” agreed Deputy Editor, Melissa Stevens. “But, the burger bun could be improved to provide more structure to the burger.”
That sentiment was echoed around the office, but our two resident burger experts were less impressed.
“I’d like to think I’ve had my fair share of burgers and if I’ve learned anything, it is that the only way to do a burger is to go big or go home, not create some kind of sandwich to appeal to health nuts,” says Technology Reporter Harry Tucker.
“The chicken was tasty and well cooked and the sauce was flavoursome. In any other burger, with a nicely baked bun this combination would bring me back every time. But I can confirm that this is no burger. The ‘SuperBun’ looks and tastes like an omelette, and an omelette as a bun just simply does not cut it for a burger.”
“My theory is, if you’re going to eat a burger, do it right. Get a bread bun (NOT brioche) and enjoy every mouthful. Enjoy this treat, then go back to healthy eating. Don’t do it half-arsed,” says Lifestyle Reporter Rebecca Sullivan, who has written many a love letter to the humble cheeseburger.
“But this ‘SuperBun’ is strange, not super. I get that some people want to avoid the calories in a burger. But if this is the case, eat a salad. Don’t eat this low-carb creation that passes for a bun. It tastes fine, but it’s not thick or solid enough to hold in the succulent chicken and bacon. It’s just not as good as bread. It doesn’t soak up all the delicious juices from the meat, avocado and the sauce.”
“Although I would agree that it’s not really a burger, it could make a decent alternative to a burger if someone fancied something a bit more substantial than a salad that’s still kind to the waistline,” adds Multimedia Editor Emma Reynolds. “It’s surprisingly eggy, a bit like a pancake-omelette-fritter hybrid — and that’s OK.”
So, what’s the verdict?
If you aren’t a huge burger eater, you’ll likely enjoy the Low Carb SuperBun burger - make sure you try it in-store, to get the full experience. If, however, burgers are your obsession, don’t do yourself an injustice and go for the real thing.
