Polly Waffle chocolate: The iconic 90s choccie bar set to return soon

More than a decade since they were pulled from shelves, the iconic chocolate, marshmallow and waffle treat is set to delight once more.

Aussie Choco bars

The return of the iconic Polly Waffle chocolate bar has been an 11-year effort and, bizarrely, COVID-19 has played a part in its comeback.

Fans of the chocolate-coated, marshmallow and wafer treat were up in arms when confectionery giant Nestle discontinued the product in 2009. Then last year, South Australian confectioner Robern Menz shared plans of its return.

Now, thanks in part to the federal government’s $50 million Manufacturing Modernisation Fund to support small to medium manufacturing businesses, its debut on shelves will be sooner than expected.

“This is the government getting behind manufacturing,” Industry Minister Karen Andrews told Sunrise.

“It’s part of a broader program that we’re rolling out – 200 projects, $215 million to drive manufacturing and create over 2500 jobs.”

As part of the fund, Robern Menz will receive $1 million, which will go towards building a new, state-of-the-art production line. The project will also bring 38 manufacturing jobs to South Australia.

“Polly Waffle is a unique chocolate bar, and although it may sound simple enough – with its combination of chocolate, wafer and marshmallow – it actually requires a number of fairly complicated processes to create,” Mr Menz told Sunrise last year.

Slated for a 2021 return, fans have expressed their excitement over social media.

“The Polly Waffle is making a comeback! Best news this week,” read one Twitter post.

“Thank you Robert Menz, I've been craving a Polly Waffle for years,” read another.

The gooey, crunchy delight isn’t the only long-awaited chocolate that’s been resurrected from the factory floor. Recently, Cadbury also returned its classic Marble block to shelves after an eight-year hiatus.

Despite this, fans were less than welcome, claiming it tasted completely different. Cadbury’s Facebook page was flooded with angry customers and they didn’t hold back their critique.

“It’s not the same as it used to be, does not taste the same,” wrote one comment.

“OMG agreed, it defs didn’t used to be that nutty tasting. It’s Nutella covered in a tiny bit of white chocolate that you can’t taste,” shared another.

“Agreed! It’s soooo nutty.”

Hopefully the Polly Waffle will have a more glowing reception.
