Peter Dutton responds to confronting image of eating dagwood dog at Ekka

Turns out Peter Dutton wasn’t the first pollie to be caught on camera tucking into a show staple.

Crowds descend on Queensland’s Royal Show

Jacqui Lambie has weighed in on the surprising pictures of Peter Dutton eating a dagwood dog at the Queensland show, joking he’s taken a page out of her book.

The Opposition Leader was spotted enjoying the tasty treat at Ekka on Wednesday.

Armed with three of the Aussie classics, Mr Dutton handed a couple of the treats out to his staff before tearing into one himself.

Speaking with 2Day FM’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin, Mr Dutton revealed the pictures have caused quite a stir.

“Most of my mates actually were pretty rapid-fire texting me like, ‘WTF’, but anyway, what do you do?” he joked.

But he stressed there was only one way you could possibly chow down on the show staple.

“With the cameras there, I mean you can’t eat it from the side because the sauce drips off and you do a Bill Shorten … so it leaves one angle and it’s not a great one,” Mr Dutton laughed.

“There is no good angle, so you just accept your fate, right?

“But chewing from the side was definitely not an option.”

It didn’t take long for Tasmanian senator Jacqui Lambie, who went viral after posting pictures of her tucking into a large fried sausage, to chime in on the pictures.

“I can see this bloke’s a graduate of the Jacqui Lambie school of eating a dagwood dog! But the question is, who did it better?” she said.

The Liberal leader used the Ekka public holiday for a day out at the Royal Queensland Show.

Donned in a blue blazer – a classic outfit of any showgoer – the Queensland MP went from stall to stall before playing a couple of carnival games.

No word on if he was victorious.

He later picked up a couple of showbags and eyebrows were raised after he chose to take home a Milkybar kit.

Why? Only because the last Queenslander to become prime minister, Kevin Rudd, bore a passing resemblance to the brand’s cartoon Milkybar Kid.

But Mr Dutton said that wasn’t the case.

“I went to the show bag stand and bought a Milky Way show bag along with a Bertie Beetle bag as well and next thing I’m accused of trying to portray an image of Kevin Rudd when he was known as Milky Bar Kid,” he said.

Mr Dutton’s day out at the show – with his staff, not his family – follows in the long tradition of pollies tucking into food while in front of cameras.

Who could forget when former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull ate a meat pie with a knife and fork.

Or when Tony Abbott decided not once but twice to hoe into a raw onion.

Not to be outdone, former Labor leader Bill Shorten has been caught out himself.

A decision to go face first into a sausage and roll sideways over the traditional end-first approach caused national horror when the pictures made their way to the internet.

Or when he made sausages on Studio 10.

So far, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has done his best to avoid pictures of himself eating.

Maybe these new pictures reveal exactly why.
