Meet Jesse James McElroy, the man who campaigned for the Golden Gaytime ice cream 1.25L tub

AUSTRALIANS are losing their minds over news that Streets has created a 1.25L tub version of the iconic Golden Gaytime ice cream. This is the man who made it happen.

The delicious move comes after extensive campaigning by the Golden Gaytime Ice Cream Tub Project Facebook page, which has more than 3500 followers and is manned by a legend named Jesse James McElroy.

The 28-year-old television commercial director from Sydney set up the page last month after experiencing a light bulb moment in the shower at 4am.

“I was speaking to my ex, she was in America and she was like, ‘Bring me some ice cream’. I said ‘I’ll bring you a Gaytime’, but it’s not enough for one person. I thought, ‘Why isn’t there a tub?’ And I freaked out and I got on my phone and created the Facebook page,” he told news.com.au.

The hilarious page says its mission was to “force Streets to make an ice cream tub of 1L/2L Golden Gaytime. They would also need to make sure the biscuits hold up using ... science or magic”.

Mr McElroy wrote a letter to Streets a few weeks ago asking them to make Golden Gaytimes in tub form.

News.com.au has obtained a copy of Mr McElroy’s letter:

“Dear Ice Cream Gods/Streets.

I have started a conquest to bring your Mighty ‘Golden Gaytime’ into tub format … I’m sorry to force you into this but I’m going to need you to create a 1L/2L Golden Gaytime Tub (use either magic of science to make sure the biscuits hold up) … can you and will you do this?

Everything in my life falls short in comparison to this … May our children’s children be thankful if it becomes a reality …

Together you and I will make the Ice Cream Gods — Bubble-O Bill, Mr Whippy, Paddle Pop Lion, Homer and 30 cent Soft Serve very proud!

Thanks, Jesse James McElroy/The Golden Chief.”

While Streets has not confirmed to news.com.au whether plans to launch the 1.25L tubs were already in the works prior to receiving the letter, Mr McElroy says he doesn’t think it’s a coincidence. On Sunday, all of his hard campaigning came to a head.

What happiness looks like.

“Yesterday I was walking through Woolworths and I walked past the freezer section and I was like, ‘Oh my God’. I just lost my sh**,” he said.

“I only bought one [tub]. I’m taking it slow. And I just sat alone in my house and ate it in the dark. And then I posted the photo on Facebook and it just went off.”

In that post, on the Golden Gaytime Ice Cream Tub Project Facebook page, Mr McElroy wrote, “Everybody shut the f*** up ... We did it ... Well actually I did most of it ... After writing my letter ... THEY RELEASED IT (only in 1.25 litre ... I guess that will have to do ... For now).”

The post has attracted 47,000 likes, 19,000 comments and has been shared more than 7000 times.

Mr McElroy says his success feels amazing. “I did it for Australia, I did it for the nation.”

A spokeswoman for Streets said the brand has released two new Gaytime-themed flavours — chocolate and mint — as well as the original Gaytime flavour.

The 1.25L tubs cost $6.99 and are available at most grocery stores nationally.
