‘Makes me proud’: Coles store praised for Anzac Day display

Workers at a Coles store in northeast Queensland have been praised over a moving display ahead of Anzac Day.
Situated at the entrance of the Annandale Coles supermarket in Townsville, the display – created by a team member who wanted to pay tribute to her dad, a war veteran – features a large statue of a soldier with poppies at his feet and a “Lest We Forget” flag.
Surrounding the statue is, fittingly, dozens of packages of Anzac biscuits, ahead of the national day of remembrance this Thursday, April 25.
A picture of the display was shared to Facebook by a shopper, where it quickly went viral.
“Coles Annandale Townsville. Huge display right as you walk in, brilliant!” the woman wrote, cheekily adding: “Take note, Woolworths.”
Other social media users jumped in the comments to praise the store.
“That is great. As a veteran it makes me proud,” one wrote.
“Bloody well done Coles – too much Aussie stuff being constantly eroded,” a second commented.
“Great respect for our Diggers. Thank you Coles Annandale Townsville,” a third said.
A number of people shared they’d seen similar tributes in their own local supermarket.
“My local Woolies has Anzac biscuits and all the Anzac badges on a big display just as you walk in the door,” one said.
In the lead up to Anzac Day, Coles will donate 40 cents from the sale of every 12-pack of Coles Bakery Anzac biscuits sold in-store and online to the Bravery Trust, a charity that supports war veterans.
“Our bakers rise to the occasion for Bravery Trust every year, making nearly 500,000 Anzac biscuits in the week leading up to Anzac Day,” Coles General Manager Bakery, Kate Roff, said in a statement.
“It’s a cause our bakers love getting behind and we hope our customers can support too by buying a 12-pack Coles Bakery Anzac biscuit on or before Anzac Day.”
