‘Jaw dropped’: Aussie in disbelief over tiny contents of Smith’s chips

A Queensland shopper has been left in stitches after opening up a packet of Smith’s chips only to find there were just five chips inside.

An Aussie shopper has called out Smith’s Chips after weighing a supposedly 45g bag of chips, only to find it was significantly lighter than advertised.

In the video, which has since gone viral on TikTok, shopper Katie Claire and her father showed the weight discrepancy by placing the sealed bag of Smith’s Original Chips on a food scale.

“Dad just picked up this bag of Smith’s chips from IGA in Queensland,” she explains. “How much is in there? We’ll have a look on the scale.”

Laughing in disbelief, they revealed the $2 snack-sized bag weighed just 14 grams.

After opening it up and assuring there was “no cheating” as “the bag was sealed”, Ms Claire and her father cackled as they tipped out the bag’s contents onto a plate.

There were about five full chips inside and a few small crumbs.

“Looking forward to eating my chippies,” her dad joked, “I’m going to have to savour them for ages. So expensive. They’re about $1 (per chip)”.

“I think per gram, they’re more than prawns and oysters,” he added.

Viewers immediately rushed to the comments to accuse Smith’s of “shrinkflation” – a term used when companies quietly reduce the amount of product in packaging while keeping the price the same.

“It’s getting worse. Everything has shrunk. Have you seen the ice creams and paddle pops? They’re all half the size,” wrote one person.

“I think the bag weighed more than the chips,” another quipped.

“MY JAW DROPPED!” someone else admitted. “SMITH’S, the audacity.”

A different user said this would make them “go into a rage”.

“That’s f***ed,” remarked yet another TikToker, as someone else claimed, “Now that’s bad”.

Other comments called it “ridiculous”, “disgraceful” and “a joke”.

However, some users pointed out that the incident was most likely due to a mistake on the production line.

“It’s a quality assessment issue,” one woman theorised. “A lot of bags get through like this. Stay away from the multipacks”.

“It happens in mass production. We had empty beer cans in the bottle-o all the time,” said another.

A spokesperson for Smith’s confirmed to news.com.au, “This is most likely a manufacturing error – the bag has been sealed early”.

They encouraged the consumer to reach out to them so that Smith’s could make it up to them.

Despite the explanation, the video has clearly struck a nerve with shoppers, many of whom are increasingly frustrated by rising costs and shrinking portion sizes.
