Inside luxury advent calendar with $1200 price tag

A luxury advent calendar with a hefty $1200 price tag has people divided over whether the exclusive fare is worth the cost.

Top tips to save money this Christmas

A luxury advent calendar with a nearly $1200 price tag is set to return this Christmas, after selling out in 2021.

Haigh’s Chocolates’ 2022 Luxury Advent Calendar is currently available for pre-order, but you’ll need deep pockets to afford the $1190 price tag.

The luxury item will feature 24 boxes, each filled with several limited edition chocolates, rather than the one piece of chocolate found in many traditional advent calendars.

Some chocolates exclusive to the calendar include never-before-seen dark orange fondant filled frogs, milk chocolate lemon meringue pie, and 70 per cent cocoa solids gin liqueur.

The packaging will be based on the confectioner’s first Haigh’s Chocolates store at Beehive Corner in Adelaide’s Rundle Mall.

“This year’s calendar celebrates more than 107 years of Haigh’s Chocolates and our very first store which opened at Beehive Corner in 1915,” CEO Alister Haigh said.

“The decorative box design captures the beauty of the heritage-listed building with sophisticated detail and complements the selection of premium quality chocolates found inside each drawer.”

Last year, the cost didn’t put off shoppers, with the calendar selling out. After that success, the chocolatier was keen to keep the tradition going.

“When we launched the Luxury Advent Calendar last year we were overwhelmed with the positive feedback we received and it was a great success for our entire team,” Mr Haigh said.

“Our ongoing commitment to deliver world-class chocolate sees us continually evolve our product range to ensure we are creating the finest chocolates year-round. Our chocolatiers’ artisan skill shines through in every chocolate crafted for this unique calendar.

“You and loved ones will enjoy experiencing exciting hidden delights in the days leading up to Christmas. We can’t wait to share it with our customers.”

But those desperate for one of the calendars will have to get in quick.

“A very limited number of calendars have been made and we anticipate that they will sell as quickly as they did last year,” Mr Haigh said.

However shoppers online are divided over the high price for the advent calendar.

“I disagree with it being overpriced. This is a luxury item. Limited in edition. They have the cheaper version for $24.50 as well. Haigh’s Chocolate is absolutely worth the price,” one person said.

Another said: “The chocolates in here sound amazing.”

But a third wrote: “I love Haigh’s Chocolates but that’s not within [the] average person’s budget no matter how nice they are. Why not do a $119 version with one or two chocs per drawer?”

Another joked at that price it would be their only Christmas present this year.

For those who love Haigh’s Chocolates but don’t want to fork out $1190, the retailer will also release its more reasonably priced calendar closer to Christmas.

It comes after the announcement of the Amazon Beauty Advent Calendar which, despite having a total retail value of $670, will sell for just $150.
