American burger giant Five Guys announced it would be opening Down Under months ago – and now finally, the time has come.

As of Monday, Sydney’s Penrith will be home to the cult burger chain’s first ever Aussie store.

But due to the Covid, the Mulgoa Road restaurant will offer takeaway only, before opening to in-store diners later this year.

There were plans to open the first Five Guys in Sydney’s CBD, but the strategy shifted to include suburban hubs and Penrith was chosen for its potential future growth, according to Broadsheet.

The restaurant will be run by Sydney-based hospitality group Seagrass Boutique Hospitality who signed a deal with the Panthers Group to open next door to the Leagues Club and in between a KFC and McDonald’s restaurant.

The Five Guys eatery will also be adjacent to the first Krispy Kreme store in Australia.

The group also oversees other Sydney brands such as 6Head, Ribs & Burgers and The Butcher and the Farmer.

Fans have already taken to social media to share their excitement.

“Woooo at last!” one person wrote on Facebook.

“Are you kidding!!!” said another, while another joked: “There goes the diet.”

Matthew Leavey, head of property for Panthers Group said Panthers are “over the moon” to partner with Seagrass to bring the first Five Guys to Australia.

“After a competitive process, we decided that aligning with a strong hospitality leader like Seagrass BHG to be able to introduce an iconic international brand like Five Guys to Penrith was in the best interest of our members and community,” Mr Leavey said in January.

Robby Andronikos, Five Guys brand operations manager, added that the Penrith restaurant would bring in job opportunities for experienced managers and leaders.

There are 1600 Five Guys restaurants across North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, with the first eatery opening in 1986 in Arlington County, Virginia.
