Detail in US blogger’s fairy bread video sparks outrage

An American food blogger has triggered an outraged reaction from Aussies after she made a big mistake in her take on fairy bread.

It’s safe to say us Aussies are rather particular when it comes to our food.

A decision by Bunnings to put the onions on the bottom, not the top, of their sausage sizzles sparked national outrage – and don’t even get us started on the correct butter to Vegemite ratio.

So it’s perhaps no surprise then that an American food blogger’s take on fairy bread was roasted by Aussies after she made a major - but understandable - error.

@theforeignfork is an American blogger famous for cooking one meal from every country on TikTok, where she has more than 40,000 followers.

In a video uploaded to TikTok @theforeignfork shared her demo of the iconic Aussie dish.

“Today we’re making fairy bread, which is really popular to eat at children’s birthday parties in Australia,” she said.

“It’s basically white bread, butter, sprinkles or hundreds and thousands on it.”

While @theforeignfork nailed fairy bread’s description and ingredients, Aussie viewers couldn’t get past her decision to cut off the bread’s crusts.

“Yeah nah we don’t cut off the crusts,” one Aussie wrote.

“Why on earth did you cut the crust off!!!?” another commented.

“Leave your crusts on! That’s your handle, so you don’t get sprinkles all over yourself,” one person helpfully explained.

“Geez cut the handlebars off why don’t you,” another said.

But others applauded her efforts, with one person describing it as the “best technique I’ve seen from an American” or even backing up her decision to go sans crust.

“I am an Australian here to defend you!” one person wrote. “Cutting the crusts off is smart because kids don’t eat them anyway!”

In response @theforeignfork wrote that she had “watched a YouTube video (from an Australian) and she told me to cut them off! I’M SORRY”.

“THEN I went to a chat room forum on fairy bread (I’m serious LOL) and people said it could go either way so I chose off. I chose wrong,” @theforeignfork added.

To be fair, it seems like an innocent mistake made despite @theforeignfork’s attempts to get it right – so we will let the fairy bread sacrilege slide this time.

But it’s not the first time an overseas take on fairy bread has sparked outrage – back in 2020 Beau Coffron, known as the @lunchboxdad on TikTok, shared a “tutorial” on how to make fairy bread.

Instead of using the traditional spread of butter, Beau lathered a slice of white bread in peanut butter.

The popular TikTok user included the caption “Don’t get mad at me Aussies” – but, of course, that’s exactly what happened.

Most of the comments on the video included the words “crime”, “fail” and “destroyed” to describe his, ahem, take on the fairy bread – some even declared it “so wrong”.
