At first glance this bread looks like any standard loaf you would get from Coles’ bakery section, but it’s gone viral thanks to one “insane” detail.

Coles recently launched a $3 Coles Bakery 50 per cent Low Carb White Toast Loaf in its bakery section which tastes so much like regular bread, taste testers were unable to tell the difference.

TikTok user Jasmine Templin posted a video revealing how the bread had half the normal carbs and higher protein than a standard loaf of white bread, making it a smart option if you were watching your calorie intake.

“If you live in Australia you need to go try this bread from Coles,” she said in the video.

“It’s only 14g of carbs and 130 calories for two slices, which is insane compared to most breads.”

Ms Templin’s video has racked up more than 27,000 views, with people stunned the calories were “so low”.

“Shhhh don’t tell people my secret; there will be none left,” one person joked.

Coles general manager bakery, deli and seafood Andy Mossop told news.com.au the new low carb bread was recently launched in stores and is “aligned with our purpose to help Australians live healthier and happier lives”.

“We have developed the recipe in partnership with Australian flour miller Manildra Group and it’s available in both loaves and rolls,” he said.

“It’s only just arrived in our stores and customers are already loving the taste and texture.”

Despite containing fewer carbs, Mr Mossop said it tasted identical to regular bread.

Aldi also has a low carb bread with a cult following.

“In fact it’s such great quality, when developing the bread, our tasting panel were unable to distinguish the difference between the lower carb line and a standard loaf,” he said.

Coles isn’t the only supermarket with a lower carb bread offering, with Aldi’s Baker’s Life 85 per cent Lower Carb bread first gaining a cult following back in 2018.

At $4.99 Aldi’s bread is more expensive than Coles’ version but contains fewer carbs, with nutritionist Susie Burrell saying: “Not only does this bread taste great, but the nutrition information is so strong it is hard to find fault with the lower-carb product.”
